I converted a 10 second divx video clip into mpeg format using non other than tmpgenc. My problem is that when I watch it on my dvd player pioneer dv440, the video is about 14inches by 8inches and is displaced to the left side of my 27inch television, which doesn't use the whole television. I make samples using video measurements of 576x240, 576x480, and 480x480. So far 480x480 works fine, gives widescreen while using the whole horizontal length of my tv, thus maximizing it. My question now is, what is the 1:1, 4:3, and 16:9 aspect ratios for? how does that compare to the other measurements 576x240, 480x480, etc. Maybe someone can send me  the template file for converting avi to mpeg2 so i dont have to perform trial and errors finding which one works since i only have so many cd-r's that i cant afford to make coasters. Thanks!!!
ps- does MGI video wave convert avi to mpeg2? or is it just for video editing such as cutting and adding audio?

All I know is that 480x480 is the SVCD-compliant standard. If you choose any other resolution you're setting yourself up to make a non-compliant SVCD disc.

I assume 480x480 should always be used for SVCDs that are converted from the originally widescreen format of the divx file. Anyhoo, I'd like to know what the difference will be if I maintained the 480x480 size but I change the aspect ratios to 1:1, 16:9, and 4:3. For instance, what will the output look like if I encode a total of 3 different files that are each set up as:
1) 480x480 aspect ratio 1:1
2) 480x480 aspect ratio 4:3
3) 480x480 aspect ratio 16:9
which one would be wider or taller? Is there a way I can view it on my computer that will show exactly how it will be displayed when I play it on my standalone so I don't have to waste time burning it on CD. Thanks for you help, I'm really intrigued by this stuff but my homework is calling me :(
