Hello.
this is a clip recorded with my hardware hdmi encoder. it gives me h246 streams.
but it doesnt work with iMovie. Is it possible to make it iMovie compatible in any way without transcoding it?

Ive tried mp4box, avidemux (crashes) etc to fix it. Anyone up for a challenge?
Thanks for all the help in advance.

Yes. iMovie does fine with files from my Canon 5D Mark II. 40mbit h246 video. works nice.
I posted it in the non-mac forum since it would be nice to be able to use them in other programs as well.
The files doesnt run properly in windows either.
They do work in adobe premiere and final cut but i want to be able to use them without transcoding them. -
(H264, not H246). Opened it on my iMac with MPEG Streamclip (1.93b2) with the Perian plugin installed. Would not play using v1.92; crashed QT Player 7; showed just a black screen in QT Player 10. Had to transcode using MPEG Streamclip (still as H264/MP4) to permit iMovie to open it. If you want the transcoded video, let me know.
edit: Just saw your reference to FCP. You will not be able to apply transitions and effects without constant rendering if you leave the video as H264 (even my transcode). You'll want to convert it to AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) which will make the file(s) much larger but it also makes editing quite easy and you may then transcode back to the delivery format you desire later. -
Transcoding is not a problem for me. I just dont want to loose quality with another encode before i put it in iMovie.
Cause a transcode actually re-encodes the video right or am i misstaken?
Streamclip worked for me here. QT player 7 crashes here as well. But the latest QT plays it just fine, i can even trim the video as well.
The thing is with this clip is that its grabbed using openRTSP. Its an encoder that gives out a stream for me to watch or save to disk so it doesnt
include any proper start or end as far as i can see. -
I just checked. It does not even work in Final Cut. Only premiere. God i hate premiere.

Use MPEG Streamclip to convert your clip to Apple Intermediate Codec, then drop it into FCP. (See my previous post)
