Hi folks.
Here's my equipment and software setup: Sony HD video camera -> firewire into Vista system, using MS Movie Maker -> MS DVD Maker to create DVD.
This has worked fine for 3 years, except for 2 times. Both imports were from the same tape, so I'm starting to think the tape is the problem.
Anyway the two problems manifestedly themselves differently. One of them, the encoding process in DVD Maker simply gets stuck and stays at "XX% completed" forever. The other time, the encoding completes, but the audio & video are out sync by the end of the DVD.
So, I'm wondering if there is some flaw or corruption in the dvr-ms files sitting on the hard drive, and if they can be corrected. Is there a program out there that could inspect these files and correct any problems found?
Thanks!

when shooting in HDV i never re-use tapes. a single bad frame in the file can ruin an entire hour of video, as most editing software will choke on it and lose the audio or freeze up like you found. there is no way i know of to fix it. the only solution i have come up with is to find the bad spot, capture the tape up to near it, stop, forward past it, then start capturing again.
