    Hey everyone

I've had Media Player Classic on my computer for a while and I used to be able to play .avi videos with no problems but recently every single .avi video I upload and try to play in MPC crashes. I've got rid of it, downloaded the latest versions, and pretty much done everything I could do but it still crashes every time I try to upload an .avi video in there. Could someone help me fix it, or if not possible, suggest a good, small program that gets the job of playing videos done?

    Thanks!

You could try mpchc instead. Or VLC Media Player or KMPlayer or SMPLayer(they have built in decoders for all formats).

What happens if you play the avi in windows media player? If it also crash it could a directshow decoder problem.

Same thing has happened to me starting this week and I think the problem is that I have Vista and something was updated this week and I started having problems with MPC. Something was replaced that makes MPC crash. Luckily I have MPC Homecinema also and that is the program I'm using now. Just look for 'Media Player Classic Homecinema' and if you've been using MPC in the past, you shouldn't have problems with MPC Homecinema.
    Good luck.

    Okay this is weird!!

Mine also started crashing last night.

Every time i try to open any avi, xvid, etc. that played fine in it before & i use MPC on a daily basis.
Also PowerDVD 9 started messing up playing xvids.
    Dvd's & VIDEO_TS folders still play fine.

I'm going to have to fire up my laptop and see if it still works.

And now that you mention it, i also did some Vista updates last night and restarted but i did not put it together until you said something.

    F#%$*@ M$!!!!!!!

Both my other machines with XP Pro run MPC fine and they have all the latest updates, so do both of my kids and a couple of friends, no problems at all.

Only my Vista machine has issues with MPC and just after the last updates a couple of days ago.

And if Shaftell ever comes back and gives us some actual details on his OS, ect. we may have 3 people with the same circumstances.

    I think I have a smiliar Problem:
My machine runs Windows 7 x64, also I am using MPC HC x64. Now my Problem:
When I want to play my own Rips of a Blu-ray, which I converted in .mp4 via Ripbot the Players works at the beginning fine. If I played the half of the Video the Player will crash. This happens also at my brothers machine (Windows 7 x86). VLC does not have any problems, although the video quality is better in MPC.
    Can someone help me?

I had same problem with media player classic crashing with AVI files. I searched for solution on internet, but couldnt find working solution for problem.

Thanks to the clue here about the windows updates, and I found the cause of this problem.

Security Update for Windows Vista (KB975560)
    Download size: 950 KB

This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in Microsoft DirectShow. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user opened a specially crafted AVI file. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.

The security update addresses the vulnerability by correcting the way that DirectShow opens AVI files. For more information about the vulnerability, see the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) subsection for the specific vulnerability entry under the next section, Vulnerability Information.

You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.

    Update type: Important
    More information:
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=167321

    Help and Support:
    http://support.microsoft.com

Solution how to fix the problem.

    1. Open Control Panel, Programs and Features.
    2. Click on View Installed Updates wait for the list to complete loading.
    3. Choose the Security Update for Windows Vista (KB975560), Right-Click and select Uninstall, follow the instructions on screen and Restart computer when asked.
    4. Go to windows update and choose to hide the update, so it wont be installed again.

Perharps the latest update for Direct X 11 - February 2010, could also fix the issue, its directshow related. quartz.dll is the cause of the problem.

    Good luck.

I experienced the same problem with Windows Media Player on Win7x64 SP1 so maybe it is related.

After I uninstalled a recent platform update it started working again.
