    You should let let your encoder use autolevel. Although the PS3 is capable of playing 4.1, since it's a blu-ray player, there is a ton on content out there needlessly marked as 4.1 even though everything else about the file is within 4.0 or less.

    If you're looking to make content that plays nice with multiple devices, we recommend the following x264 and HandBrake presets:

    DivX Plus compatible settings for x264:
    Code:
    x264 --vbv-maxrate=20000 --vbv-bufsize=25000 --level 40 --bframes 3 --keyint <4*FPS> -o <output file> <input file>
    HandBrake advanced settings:
    Code:
    level=40:ref=2:bframes=2:subq=6:mixed-refs=0:weightb=0:8x8dct=0:trellis=0:vbv-maxrate=20000:vbv-bufsize=25000
    Our recommendations are further explained here:
    http://developer.divx.com/docs/divx_plus_hd/Creation_with_x264/

    So these should work for the Playstation 3 as well as across many other H.264 devices.
