I've been using GSpot to check out video codecs but it seems like it might be a little out of date. Also, it worked great on XP, but I'm not sure about Windows 7.
Any suggestions for a codec identifier program? I checked out the list here in the Tools section; but I'm open to suggestions for something that will work with Win7 Pro.

  3. I use a mix of GSpot and MediaInfo. Each has their strengths.

I like GSpot; it seems like it hasn't been updated recently. I was thinking it might not be able to identify some of the more recent H.264 codecs.
    MediaInfo looks workable.

  5. Yes, MediaInfo is better for h.264 video. GSpot is better for MPEG 2 and Divx/Xvid -- it can give you much more information for those codecs, even map the I/B/P frames.

I haven't been able to get MediaInfo to open correctly for over a year (no matter what version I install). Everytime I open a file it opens in default view instead of text view which I have to tell it evey time. The only version that will work correctly on my machine is MediaInfoLite.

I'm better off ticking "shell info tip" in preferences since it shows all the info that I want to see in text mode while hovering my mouse over a file in Explorer.

Another thing I don't like about MediaInfo is that it opens in a dinky window and you have to resize every single time you open a file. It would be nice if there was an option to remember page size and position or open in full screen mode. At least you can maximize the window in the regular versions, in MediaInfoLite, you can't.

After installing and uninstalling different versions, I finally got mediainfo to open in text mode. Don't know what was causing this but it's been going on a long time. I used a program called Revo Uninstaller to uninstall the last time and it must've got rid of something in the registry that was messing it up.

Now if someone knows a registry hack to get the window to open in a different size, I'll be a happy man.
