  1. Hi guys!

This problem has been bugging me for about 2 weeks now and I reckon it's time I got it sorted !
It happens on a quite a few DVD rips (especially the extras), but Futurama is good case in point.

I rip the DVD using SmartRipper 2.36
Load the VOBs into DVD2AVI and they look terrible ......
I get the classic interlace 'comb' effect on fast motion but it also looks like there are 2 frames in 1 at times.
I can pause the playback on a particular frame and it shows one frame blended with the next ...... no amount of de-interlace is going to get rid of that!

BTW, this is a PAL DVD.

I've tried all the DVD2AVI settings to try and fix it ...... maybe it's SmartRipper?
Just to clarify, it looks this way before going through any other software ...... ie. AVISynth, VDub, TMPGenc etc etc.

Now I'm thinking it's got something to do with the video being made for TV at 50Hz/60Hz but I don't have a clue where to start to try and fix it!

    Any ideas guys?

    Cheers,

  2. i've been where you are....thrown up my hands at the ivtc attempt & simply encoded straight 29.97fps, but since this is pal why are you even worrying about this? 2 or more progressive frames blended into 1 is not all that uncommon for animation transfers....you just have to live with it

  3. Thanks for your reply Stan!

    I've got a further question ........

If I've 'just got to live with it' why, when I play the DVD on my Pioneer dv444 or my PC, does it look fine but when I preview the VOBs in DVD2AVI does it look really blurry?

I hear what you're saying about this video being PAL - I shouldn't have to do any IVTC (or similar) should I?!!?

Can somebody please explain to me why a PAL DVD looks great but the SmartRipper VOBs have all these interlace type problems?

    Laters,

  4. interlacing will not show up on a tv display(even if you pause). if you are playing the dvd on your pc, software bob is most likely being used to remove the artifacts(dvd2avi displays unfiltered, unresized). if you encode 25fps untouched the svcd will play the same as the dvd; however, if you wanted you could attempt to correct the telecine shift with a basic telecide filter. it's strictly unnecessary for mpeg2 encoding & since the transfer is animation i'd leave it alone

  5. Ahhhhh ..... I think I see now!

So you're saying, if I just go ahead and encode an interlaced 25fps PAL SVCD Mpeg2 file (say using TMPGenc), it'll playback just like the DVD on my players ...... right?!!?

Never thought of that ...... as soon as I saw the nasty DVD2AVI output, I started trying to fix it!

I'll give it a shot ASAP ....... thanks a million mate!
