  1. i have ffdshow installed on a laptop with two stereo speakers. whenever i watch an avi that is encoded in 5.1, i only hear the left-front and right-front audio channel from the 5.1 format. since all of the dialog goes to the center channel, i can never hear what the actors or actresses are saying.

avi's encoded in 2.0 play fine.

so, how do i set up ffdshow audio codec to ALWAYS output in 2.0, even if the file is in 5.1?

    thank you.

Moving you to our software playing section as this is not any video conversion.

  4. Baldrick, that link you posted is some kind of user guide to windows 7. my question pertains to the coder/decoder software ffdshow. as i am also running windows xp and not windows 7, i fail to see the relevancy. perhaps my original post was not clear.

specifically, i want to set up ffdshow to run in stereo mode only. i do not want it to do any kind of surround sound (dolby 5.1, etc) at all because my laptop only has two speakers, hence it can't support surround sound playback.

however, i have some avi files whose audio streams are encoded in 5.1. when i try to play those files, ffdshow tries to send the sound to the surround sound speakers, which are not present on my laptop. this results in some very bizzare movie listening experiences, because i am only hearing the right and left front surround speakers. the dialog of the movie, which normally emits from the center channel of dolby 5.1, is completely lost, becuase my specific computer has no center speaker (only right and left).

so how do i make it so ffdshow outputs ALL audio streams to the left and right speakers only and does not attempt to send sound to the (nonexistent) surround sound speakers? on my stereo in my living room there is a simple button that switches between 5.1 mode and 2.0 (stereo) mode. im sure, with the bazillions of settings ffdshow has, there is a way of performing that simple task.

my question is: what are the specific steps to make that happen?

    thank you.

  5. open the ffdshow audio configuration, find the "mixer" category on the left panel and checkmark the box to activate it. Set the mixer to your audio setup (stereo in your case), push apply
