i tried burning 3 dvds today with that external USB plexicor drive on three diffrent computers ... 2 laptops and 1 pc. burned the same iso with imgburn on each machine. result: all three coasters.
burned the iso to a dvd using my internal light on PC drive, with imgburn. result: success 3 times in a row. discs play on all standalones.
conclusion: either all external DVD burners are crap, my particular DVD burner is crap, or both. external drive now serves as a paperweight ... to securely hold last night's garbage bag firmly to the bottom of the dumpster. best use i found for it so far!
best to all, again many thanks to all who helped.

One bad drive does not condemn the whole species. Quite a few people here use external drives without issue. You have had some bad luck with yours, which is unfortunate. Next time, stick with brand names, do a bit of research up front before purchasing, and understand that even with brand names, sometime things go wrong.
At least you can stop burning coasters for a while.Read my blog here.
