Hello,
I have the TS file got from HDTV in 1920x1080 (without blank spaces 1920x816) x264 17.9 GB. I converted it with "Ripbot264 1.15.0". The profile was High@level4. Cropped blank spaces and resized from 1920x816 to 1920x1080 (much better like this).
The result is 16.5 GB. I need <=12 GB. I can use different softwares. I think that I should record the view and then convert to x264 (high quality of image and support up to 1920*1200). Mine laptop is new with Windows 7 Ultimate Final x64 OS and 4 GB of RAM : Asus g71v ( http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=BIobfxtaVu9MPKdx ). I have 200 GB free space in one HDD and 450 GB in another.
How do you suggest to reach my goal ?

You can crop and replace with black borders to original resolution but if you upsize only vertically you will get wrong picture aspect ratio (people will look tall and thin), unless your original source already had a wrong aspect ratio. Use avisynth for cropping and adding borders, or maybe you can do it within ripbot.
To get your desired filesize you should use 2-pass encoding and set the average bitrate correctly.
Do not "record the view". Use the original TS file again with Ripbot264 and encode with correctly choosen bitrate this time.
Change to Mode 2-PASS and set KBPS to desired average bitrate.
Or alternatively use CQ and rise CRF value until you get an acceptable file size with acceptable quality.Ronny -
I'll give a try. What is the reason you don't recommend "record the view" ? No good codecs for recording, which would later be got to mine wishing size of x264 ?

Regardless of what codec you use:
file size = bitrate * running time
Use a lower bitrate to get a smaller file size. -
I'm pretty sure you can also set the desired file size when you switch to two-pass. The option appears on the right, as an alternative to the desired bitrate.

I did conversion with 2 passes. Quality is good, but not the best. This film is ~02:40:000 long. I have converted NEW film from Blu-Ray disc ~02:20:00 long into 10.9 GB with 1 pass with Ripbot264 1.15 with asus g71v as described in first message.
What about recording the view into WVC-1 ?
