LG HDD DVD recorder won't delete

Hey there, my friend called me and said that her LG HDD DVD recorder all of a sudden won't delete the programs saved on the hard drive. She is not computer savvy at all, and I have not been able to get to her house to look at the machine. Can anybody give me suggestions as to what she can try. I asked about the batteries in the remote, but they are new. She would rather not re-format the hard drive, and I am not even sure that she could at this point. Thanks.

Which model?

You can test a remote control by aiming it at the LCD viewfinder in a digital camera. Each button press will produce a visible flash in the viewfinder.

It's possible that if she is not computer savy she may be doing something wrong, it's possible that she has them protected "locked" to prevent accidental deletion (possibly a default).
