I have a catalogue of recorded mini DV tapes recorded on a Sony TVR20E. Unfortunately the tape mechaism has finally given up on me. I've bought a Samsung D381 purely for the purpose of getting these tapes reansferred onto my PC for editing. The video is fine but the audio is very poor quality, sounds like it's recorded at a differnt encode mode. The Sony camera was set at 12bit and I've tried the Samsung at 12bit and 16bit but it makes little difference. Since this was all recodred "digitally" i had thought this should be foolproof! Any thoughts if I'm doing something wrong or is there general incompatibility between manufacturers.
    Many thanks

I'm not sure if this related.did you use USB or firewire to transfer to your PC? and what software did u use?

if you are using a firewire .give WinDv a try

Thanks, it was Firewire. I used Corel Video Studio Pro, but it was the same on MS MovieMaker and on Nero. I'll have a look at WinDV. But I think it's an inherent incompatibility between Sony and Samsung cameras unfortunately

Maybe, but far more likely to be down to capture software (beware: WinDV has its quirks with audio too - there's a recent thread here about this).

What does it sound like on the camera itself? Listen to it via the camcorder speaker, or the TV output.

I have a DV camcorder that garbles the audio playback from tapes recorded on another machine - it's a tracking issue. It just so happens that the tracking problems between those two machines (the one that recorded it vs the one that's playing it) hit the audio track.

    Cheers,
    David.
