hi. new here. i hope i'm posting in the correct area.

i've been ripping/burning for awhile now and encountered a problem yesterday. my ripping/burning times have tripled and i have no idea what the cause is. yesterday morning i burned 5 disks with no problem. later in the afternoon the ripping/burning times tripled. i'm using a liteon burner, ihap422(VL18) only a few months old.

The HD is running in DMA mode. I noticed that on the first primary IDE channel setting the CURRENT TRANSFER MODE is set to ULTRA DMA MODE 5 but the second primary IDE channel setting is set to PIO MODE which I cannot change. Is this normal?

I also defragged my HD and tried to do a system restore to yesterday morning but could not do a restore. I also uninstalled/reinstalled DVD shrink and IMG Burn. Rip/burn times are still crawling. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Thank you in advance.

You don't want any drive in PIO mode:

To check DMA/PIO mode within Windows:
    Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
From there, right click on one of the channels and choose 'Properties>Advanced Settings'. All drives should be DMA mode. The 'Current Transfer Mode' for Hard drives is usually DMA 4-6 and DVD burners DMA 2-4, DVD ROMs usually DMA 2. If you see any in PIO mode, that can slow things down.
Changing them back may be easy or complicated. First see if you can change them in that window. If not, I usually uninstall the channel the drive is on and let the OS reinstall it. This will usually take a reboot. This will not damage any files on the computer.
Drives get reverted to PIO mode after six consecutive read failures. Very common with scratched or damaged discs. Unfortunately Windows still fails to inform you of this and won't automatically reset it. But if you are getting very slow reads and very high CPU usage during reads, PIO is likely the problem.
