I've been using ffmegx for years to convert avi files to DVDmpeg2enc with subtitles burned in. The resulting TS folder is then burned to a DVD so I can play it on a stand alone DVD player. Two weeks ago, some of the avi files which I had previously converted to TS folders now only show green when played in quicktime (or when the icon is shown in the Finder). However, the files still play in their entirety in VLC. Have not yet resolved the Quicktime green screen problem. Other avi files are able to be encoded and play just fine--it's just a select few--and even within a series of files, some are green while others are fine.
Have tried to take those same avi files and again create TS folders. Mplayer plays them fine with both sound and subtitles when I preview them in ffmpegX before encoding, but the resulting TS folder plays green for 5 seconds with no subtitles and a burst of sound in the last second.
The Process Information is really, REALLY long--here's the beginning:
this is the part where things seem to go wrong:Encoding started on Fri Feb 5 18:13:03 HST 2010

Green screen is usually a decoding error, like when a video codec isn't (fully) recognized/supported.
Is it possible that you didn't select the same decoder for the files that encoded well and those that didn't?
If you would select 'Decode with mplayer' for one file and 'Decode with Quicktime' for another, or neither (which in effect falls back to decoding with ffmpeg), then the results may differ. -
I've been doing it the same each time and don't usually select a decoder (use most of the default settings). In ffmpegX, I assumed that I had to use mplayer. The only time I used Quicktime is if I want to check a clip and play it to check audio/video quality (not within ffmpegx). Just got two new clips now and they both came in showing only green--will try them in ffmpegX to see if I am able to get them to encode. This is all too strange.
With QT, I also have Perian, DivX, MPEG Streamclip, but none of them work with these clips. <sigh> Don't recall adding any codecs recently (I wouldn't know what to add). -
First of all, thank you VERY much for staying with me on this. I learn so much about this app by just problem solving and that takes me a step further every time! I also learn new features of ffmpegx which I never knew before, such as the INFO and PLAY button at the top of the window (duh). Not sure which information you are talking about, but here's what I found:
Summary of Source format for the green screen file:
From: AVI
Video: mpeg4, yuv420p, 640x352
Audio: mp3, 48000 Hz, stereo, 192 kb/s
VIDEO: [XVID] 640x352 12bpp 29.970 fps 1241.5 kbps (151.6 kbyte/s)
audiocodec: framecopy (format=55 chans=2 rate=48000 bits=0 B/s=24000 sample-576)
Summary of Source format for a file that converted successfully:
From: AVI
Video: mpeg4, yuv420p, 640x352
Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, stereo, 192 kb/s
VIDEO: [XVID] 624x352 24bpp 29.970 fps 1360.2 kbps (166.0 kbyte/s)
audiocodec: framecopy (format=2000 chans=2 rate=48000 bits=0 B/s=24000 sample-768)
Now that my curiosity's piqued, here's file from a different series that converted successfully:
VIDEO: [XVID] 640x360 24bpp 29.970 fps 1349.7 kbps (164.8 kbyte/s)
audiocodec: framecopy (format=55 chans=2 rate=48000 bits=16 B/s=24000 sample-1)
Hmmmm, I'm stumped. -
