Is there going to be any appreciable quality difference one way or the other between the formats listed above?

What method/app would you personally use ( i.e. potentially would yield better quality) to convert .dv to .avi?

Or is it as simple as converting the file with Windows QT and that's as good as one can do?

Looking for the optimum solution. Quality is KING!

    Never done this before.

    Thanks,
    Bruce

The notes/user comments for that program seem to indicate there is a file size limatation/restriction for what is video wise rather small by today's standards & usage.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

I'll be using .dv files that are 20-25 gigs each!

  4. I don't know if this is the "best" way but it certainly is one way:

you can use ffmpeg to stream copy into avi container

ffmpeg -i input.dv -vcodec copy -acodec copy output.avi

if you don't like using the command line, you can use a gui like avanti (set the video & audio to "copy")

Check out Enosoft (free for personal).

I assume you mean *.dv to DV format avi.

  6. DV is a compression scheme. AVI is a container -- a "box" you put video in. If you remux your DV video into an AVI there is no quality loss. You're just taking the video out of one box and putting it into another.
