  1. Okay well first I'll start off by explaining what I'm attempting to do. I want to record my gameplay from my ps3 in HD using a monitor.

According to my friend that has a good amount of experience in this field, the set up he had me get should have worked and were both stumped on why it isn't working. Basically this is my set up:

My monitor is hooked up to the PS3 by HDMI and VGA/component by being in the "out" on the back of the HDPVR. In the "in" spots on the back I have my PS3 hooked up to it using a universal component cable that I bought at gamestop.

Now here's the issue. I turn on my PS3 and switch my monitor to view HDMI, I go to "display settings" then choose to do "component / D" option. I hit "X" to start testing it, and... nothing. Nothing happens, the screen is on but stays black for 30 seconds. I'm completely stumped on why it isn't working.

Does the universal component cable not work for the PS3 slim? On the front it says it works for PS3, Wii and 360, but it says nothing about the slim. I figure if it works for the regular PS3 then it working on the slim shouldn't be a problem. I'm really lost and not sure what to do now considering I've dumped a good 600 dollars onto getting this set up to work.

Any advice or feedback would be much appreciated.

1: Set tv to vga input
2: Hdpvr on (make sure hdpvr menu is shown on screen and set input to component)
    3: Turn ps3 on

    Should work in passthrough

If not, turn ps3 , hdpvr and tv off and disconnect hdmi from tv and try again

  3. Yes, when testing the display settings I switch the input to VGA, then it automatically switches through the other inputs until it reaches HDMI again. It is acting as if there is nothing at all hooked up to the VGA. I've done 1-3 MANY of times already, though I haven't tried starting from scratch without the HDMI in the PS3. I'll give that a shot real quick.

    Thanks for the reply

EDIT: Yah still doesn't do anything. When restarting the PS3 and having it on a display mode thats previously not viewable by HDMI (lets use composite for example) the screen remains black for about 10 seconds then says theres a HDMI display option I could use. Now I figured the PS3 would do the same for component if HDMI wasn't hooked up but it doesnt seem so. So its one of 2 things, either the PS3 doesnt recognize the universal component cable or the PS3 only gives that option with the HDMI.

Remove the HDMI cable and besure power down the PS3 then hold down on the power button that take about 5 sec so you can set the video mode.

  5. Yup just tried that and still get nothing. Maybe its the component cord I have running from the ps3? I bought one of those universal component cables at gamestop, said it worked on 360, wii and ps3 so I bought it. I figured that if the component worked for a regular ps3 it would work for a ps3 slim.

P.S. I bought 2 of those universal component cables, brand new and both aren't working.

Have try run the PS3 component in to TV set to see if working?.

  7. Cant, don't have a HDTV here, just a standard tv and a monitor. I may give that a try when I have the chance though.

This may sound like an idiotic question to ask, but have you tried hooking up the PS3 to the monitor using your universal component cable only, leaving the HDPVR and the HDMI cable entirely out of the setup?

Monitors with component inputs that are not TVs are rare. I saw Asus had one, when I was shopping for a new monitor recently, but the others I saw were actually inexpensive TVs. That's why people trying to help you are assuming your monitor is actually an HDTV.

Any TV or Monitors with component inputs will do it dosen't matter if SD or HD TVset as long it has component in order to test that console universal component cable.

Cant. Since I have to work through the VGA I need something to connect it to in the middle. In this case the HDPVR, the "ins" and "outs". If I were to connect my PS3 using component cable directly to my monitor directly it would require a VGA/PS3's output which I'm not even sure exists o_o

Hmm... So in other words your monitor doesn't have a component video-in connection.

If the HDPVR is set up as recommended for recording game play, you'd connect the component loop out from the HDPVR to your monitor/TV using component RCA jacks. It's intended as just a pass through for video from the PS3. The reason why it works so well is there is no video lag that way.

The video capture stream from the HDPVR goes to your PC via USB, and you could watch it using software, but there's too much lag to play the game properly using the HDPVR, your VGA card, and your monitor that way.

[Edit] If you mean you have connected the HDPVR's component loop-out to your VGA card, it won't work. If you have one of the few VGA cards with component video ports, those are for video-out not video-in.

  12. Well hooking up the HDPVR's 'out' to my monitors VGA in is the only way I can do this. So that means im screwed?

No other option is component to hdmi converter box or try out hdmi to component cable using HD-PVR output which you may get lucky and it work or may not work to your PC Monitor.
Dose the PC see PS3 video in TME?.

  14. Yes, but not when hooked up to component. When I hook it up to my standard TV I can see and record just fine. It doesnt show anything when hooked up thru component to the monitor though. Problem with what your talking about is that I only have 1 HDMI slot on my monitor. Right now I'm playing PS3 on my monitor directly w/o HDPVR thru HDMI, it only has 1 HDMI in the back, so if I were to use that one HDMI slot for recording.. I'd have to play with that 1-2 second delay on TME.

  15. Yes, you're screwed. You need a monitor that can display component video. (VGA and component video are both analog but they are completely different systems.) Or you can get a component to VGA converter. But it would probably be cheaper to get at new monitor/HDTV. For example:

From the website jagabo provided, there is this device http://www.svideo.com/ypbprvga.html

It is not as expensive as a new monitor. You'd connect the component loop out from the HDPVR to the component-in for the converter. Then you would hook up a VGA cable from the VGA-out on the converter to the VGA-in for your monitor. I can say how well these work, but they are intended for the use you want to put one to.

    From the website "This converters accepts Component Video at 480i, 480p, 576i, 576p, 720p, or 1080i and converts it to a VGA signal at 640x480, 800x600, 1027x768, 1440x900, 1400x1050, 1600x1200, 1680x1050, 1920x1200, or 1280x768."

Monitors look best using their native resolution. Before you buy, make sure the HD resolutions the converter is capable of providing don't look so horrible on your monitor that you can't stand to use the thing. You can probably set up your video card to test different resolutions.

I suspect that devices down samples to ~640x480 and then upscales to the output resolution. That might be OK for gaming though.

  20. Well a friend made a good point to me.. He said he doesn't think that would fix my issue. Reason being is that I cant even get the video from component to show up on TME so its the HDPVR itself that isn't getting a signal from the component wires. But.. the component wires are brand new and say they work for the ps3.

  21. What resolution do you have the ps3 set to? The HD PVR will capture 702p and 1080i. It will not capture 1080p.

  22. Cant set my PS3 to any specific resolution until I can see it on my monitor. I go to display settings with HDMI settings so I can see whats going on, then I go to composite, it tells me its going to search for the signal, but it never finds it. Now IF I were able to get past that part, picking the resolution is the next step. But since I held the power button for 5 seconds to reset the display settings you'd think thatd do the trick.

Do you still have the PS3 composite cable if so hook that to HDPVR to test it in TME if it still not working then maybe the HD-PVR your is bad

  24. I hook it up to my HDPVR with composite and it works just fine, I can record and live stream in standard. I just can't get the HDPVR to receive the signal from the PS3 using the component.. I really don't understand why its not working >.<

Maybe there a problem with HD-PVR it self, Do have any other device that can output component like DVD or Bluray Player

  26. Can you connect the universal component cable from the PS3 directly to the monitor/TV and get a picture? Get that working first, set the PS3 to 720p or 1080i, then put the HD PVR in the middle.

  27. HISTORY:
I have the exact same problem as you and have come up with a few solutions that I am still working on.

Okay so my biggest problem is that the recomended resolution input for my monitor is 1440/900, most converters, be it component to VGA, hdmi to DVI, etc. only support 1080i (i do believe my monitor is supported by 1080p)

I currently use an HDMI to DVI cable for my xbox which works perfectly (my monitor supports both DVI and VGA)

however I cannot record with my hauppage because it only has component in and out as I'm sure you know.

My solution so far, although I have not executed it is an hdmi splitter

I plug this hdmi splitter into my xbox and then plug the HDMI to DVI cable into one of the ports (that way the resolution to my monitor stays intact) and then plug an hdmi cord into the other half of the splitter

now this is where I am having trouble, the monitor shows the xbox's output very well with this method (if your monitor does not have DVI input then im sure a component to VGA cable should work) I am having trouble with converting the hdmi signal into component so that way I can use the HDPVR

Im sure you know the HDPVR does not require an output just an input to record, so what I am doing is splitting off the signal before it gets to the HDPVR so that way the HDPVR does not change the resolution of the signal which has ran me into problems earlier.

Im not sure if you are in the same scenario but my monitor will not accept a component output (when its converted to VGA) because component only supports 1080i, well at least the component cables that come with the xbox. So HDMI is the only solution to me

    QUESTION:

So now I have a qquestion to anyone else who may be reading this, if I split the signal, which will be in 1440x900 format because my monitor requries it, are there any possible devices that could convert an hdmi 1440x900 signal into a very high quality component signal that is accepted by the HDPVR? If you could maybe send me a link or something it would be greatly appreciated

*im not sure what formats the Hauppage HDPVR accepts? if it can accept 1440x900 resolution then are there any converters which simply translate the signal and do not change the resolution? and if it cant accept 1440x900 and only a certain resolution are there any HDMI to component converters that can change the resolution whilst still keeping it high quality?
