  1. I am converting a load of PAL SHVS tapes (and some VHS).

    Setup is Panasonic NV-HS800 >Svideo (& L&R Stereo) > ADVC300 > IEEE 1394 to PC

I bought ADVC300 as read that this would help with getting best I can from Analogue signal.

Should I look at also getting a TBC ? ........... or also read that using FFFT3DFilter with AVISynth is a benefit ...

Are there are sources for used TBC units .. only ones on Fleabay are new ones in US.

    Advice welcome.

In case it makes any diffrence .. once in PC, I'm using Sony Vegas for editing then creating DVD at max bit rate MEG2

Read the 3rd post here: http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/showthread.php/alternative-avt-8710-1853.html
That covers TBCs in depth. What to use, why and when.

    About the ADVC-300, read these:

NOTE: Comments about 100 model also apply to 300 model.

You may not want a used TBC, as many of them are inferior.
Your best bet is with a AVT-8710 from B&H at http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/276891-REG/AV_Toolbox_AVT_8710_AVT_8710_Multi_St...3167/KBID/4166
(B&H ships worldwide, they're an international company based in New York.)

AVISynth is useful post-capture, sure. Really depend son the errors you have.
VirtualDub is another option, with its many filters.

  3. Thanks for detailed reply ... seems 3 out of 4 for the ADVC300 ... but best used with a TBC.

Looks like I can get the TBC in UK ON, seems it is badged by many sellers.
I can get it locally as http://www.howtoconvert.co.uk/howtbc.htm
    or http://www.avtoolbox.co.uk/tbcpage.shtml

    etc.

    Guess I need to buy

I assume I would you cable this between VCR and ADVC300
Be using SVideo ... is there any appreciable delay ? ... assume audio does not go through, in which case as there is extra processing on video signal is there a issue of synchronisation being lost.

VCR > TBC > capture device --- yes, correct
No sync loss, no. If anything, it's negligible, a micro-portion of a second. (1/50th of a second)

  5. OK ... after your advice I did a bit of googling around and the AVT-8710 seems well respected for it's price.

So took the plunge and ordered one ....

Can you offer any tips of using one of these, do you just use it in 'plug & play' mode, if not welcome advice on what/how to set it up.
