I'm trying to edit my buddies wedding video. His best man made an AWFUL speech and what I would like to do is pause the video so I can add in some funny images of his ridiculous references, point out certain moments (like people's shocked faces), etc.
I have already ripped the 15 min speech to a WMV file - just need a suggestion from someone in the know as to what software application will allow me to do this best. I don't have much experience editing videos, so I need something rather simple - but more advanced than Windows Movie Maker and iMovie.

From your description, I do not think you are looking for powerhouse like "Vegas." A good choice would be Corel's VideoStudio Pro X2. Get the manual that comes with the boxed version and you are off and running.

Check out Sony Movie Studio or Adobe Premiere Elements, you can download the demos from their respective websites.

I agree with Movie Studio. The Platinum version goes for around $70 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CPFWI2
With 4 video and 4 audio tracks you will have plenty of freedom to overlay video, images or add music tracks, not to mention that if for any reason you wish to use AVCHD footage in the future, the platinum version will take it on the timeline, no problem.
