A friend sent me the files to burn a DVD, but I'm encountering a problem I haven't come across before. I'm missing the files VTS_02_0.VOB and VTS_03_0.VOB--but I DO have VTS_02_0.IFO, VTS_02_0.BUP, VTS_03_0.IFO, and VTS_03_0.BUP.

Am I correct in assuming that VTS_02_0.VOB and VTS_03_0.VOB must have existed at some point in order for those .IFO and .BUP files to exist? There are VTS_02_1.VOB and VTS_03_1.VOB files, so I can't just erase the IFO and BUP files, either.

Is there any way to get around this? To create the missing VOBs or something?

    Thanks!

Yes ... at some point those vobs existed

No you cannot create vobs ... well from thin air without knowing the original content

Open each vob in question in vlc and see what each contains ... then contact this friend and ask them if what you seen is all there was to be

If not then you'll advise this friend to supply the files to complete this title

If yes ... strip the video and audio from each vob title into separate folders and simply reauthor

I took a look at a random DVD and on mine, the VIDEO_TS.VOB and VOB_02_0.VOB and VOB_03_O.VOB and a few other VOB_0*_0.VOB files are all the same size. I am highly skeptical that this would work, but if you get desperate and your friend is too clueless to help, you could try to copy VIDEO_TS.VOB to the missing files and see if it works. I doubt it will, but I suppose you could try.

VOB_0*_0.VOB are menu vobs... not mandatory. What are you burning with? Are you getting any error message?

Bjs - thanks for that info/confirmation. I don't know how to strip and reauthor, but I'll look into it.

jman98 - Tried that before posting and it didn't work, but thanks!

ChrissyBoy - I'm using DVDShrink to create an .ISO and I get an error message when I try to open the files; it says "Failed to open VOB_02_0.VOB / File is missing."

Here's an explanation as to why you might not want to use DVDShrink to create ISOs:
    http://www.digital-digest.com/~blutach/pgcedit_guide/burning_with_pgcedit/burning_with...pgcedit_v2.htm
Read the "TECHNICAL INFORMATION ..." section at the bottom.

Some burning programs like Nero may let you create and burn a DVD even with the missing files, but they will bitch about it. ImgBurn is another way to create ISOs and a great program for burning. Don't know if it will let you get away with the missing VOBs or not.

A ripping tool of some kind should let you extract the data from the disc, which you can then re-author. DVDDecrypter should work. DVDFab HD Decrypter may be OK, not sure about the free version though. Ripping the video in IFO mode is generally best as you can configure that to give you one big file for each separate VOB section such as one big file for VOB_01*, another one for VOB_02* and so on.

Load the vobs into ifoedit and create a new ifo/bup,rename the vobs to VTS_01_1.VOB,VTS_01_2.VOB etc before using ifoedit, then use dvdshrink after the ifo/bups have been created.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.
