I just bought a Graphic Card for the first time, yeah i know but i'm not a gamer and i always had integrated GC thus far.
I'm not exactly sure of what's the right procedure to install this new GC and i will need some guidance so pay attention. Here's what i've found on the net thus far:
1: I must uninstall the drivers of the integrated GC first (which would be Ati Catalyst Control Center in my case i believe) with the add/remove programs panel (Windows Xp).And it seems that's all
2: Reboot, go to the bios, disable an option called "onboard VGA" and also set the option called "Init Display First" (also called "Primary VGA BIOS" or "VGA Boot From" depending on the bios ) to PEG Port/Graphic Adapter Priority this is for PCi Express cards only (which is my case indeed)
3: Shutdown the PC , install the new GC + boot (and hopefully everything will be ok)
If someone is familiar with installing graphic card and if that procedure seems correct to you let me know please.

That's the right way to do it. As you reboot back into windows with the new card it'll prompt you for video drivers for the new hardware. Then one more reboot after you've installed the new card drivers.

You've pretty much got the procedure down, but I would like to add a couple of suggestions. Since you have ATI adapter, check to see if you can find an installed program called AtiCimUn.exe. Mine is located at C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\UninstallAll. This program will uninstall all current ATI programs and drivers. It does a fairly good job at removing all the ATI stuff. When that is finished, go in to the Add or Remove Programs control panel and verify that all the ATI items are gone. If not, remove them with the control panel. Then before rebooting, I usually run a registry cleaner or two. Its amazing how much crap is left over from from uninstalled programs. I use Eusing Free and COMODO registry cleaners, but there are many others as well. I have never had any issues letting the programs remove whatever items they find. Then continue with step 2. Everything else you have listed looks good.

Yeah, there used to be a separate ATI uninstaller. Had a buggered uninstall about a year ago and when searching the subject found out it was advisable to use the uninstaller, first I'd noticed it. I updated my graphics drivers and CCC last week and found it wasn't in the previous update (from ~ 3 months ago). Doing the uninstall through Add/Remove Programs worked just fine.
The procedure above looks okay. Good luck.Pull! Bang! Darn! -
Well bad news guys, i went to the bios before doing anything stupid to verify if i have the options "onboard vga" and "Init Display First" and it appears i have none of them (and i looked everywhere).
I suppose this mobo is too old (2006) or the bios is too "locked up" as it's an OEM machine after all but it's ok i was planning to buy a new mobo/new cpu soon, i guess i will have to wait.
I find it strange though, how does one do if the integrated GC's got a problem ? Buy a new mobo ?*** DIGITIZING VHS / ANALOG VIDEOS SINCE 2001**** GEAR: JVC HR-S7700MS, TOSHIBA V733EF AND MORE -
just because you can not turn off the onboard VGA doesn't mean you can't install a new card
-
I don't know about this assertion buddy , yesterday i have installed the card and the pc was acting strange from the very start i have put it on with some kind of boot/reboot routine. When i removed it everything was ok again.

Did it start in safe mode?
-
Not having an option to disable the onboard video does seem a bit strange. When you boot up with the new adapter installed, do you make it to the windows startup splash screen? If so, see if you can boot in to safe mode. If it makes it that far, go in to the Device Manager and try disabling the onboard video from there.
edit: I think this is where stiltmans reply was headed. -
My old Dell didn't have the option.
I uninstalled the adapter in device manager
Rebooted, and didn't let windows reinstall it
Had Windows default VGA
Installed new card
rebooted
installed latest drivers from manufatures website -

I got another hdd so maybe i'll try with this one ,quickly install xp on it and see what's the outcome, but like i say, i don't even make it to the splash screen with this new gc.*** DIGITIZING VHS / ANALOG VIDEOS SINCE 2001**** GEAR: JVC HR-S7700MS, TOSHIBA V733EF AND MORE -
It seems i have not properly installed the card in its slot the first time, today i retried the boot and the installation were perfect.

Ok now that i got it working i wanna know something: is there a tool such as Ati Control Center (ati cards) but for Nvidia cards that could sit in the system tray. That would be very helpful

I just replaced a gfx card and a new MObo, and weirdly XP booted up without too many problems .. went from Nvidia Mobo /8600GT to an INtel G41 / ATI 4670 .. ( Had to remove Grafix card with a Hammer .. still works fine tho.). THEN I installed the software. Seems to be fine,
specially after that really short hairy Guy helped me install the GFx card
