Hi, I'm looking for the fastest encoder/converter that can output a mp4 file for playback on my phone.
I'm not looking for quality, but speed and compatibility instead.

I know a few converters that will do the job, but thy are to slow.
So I'm hoping for a program supporting GPU acceleration.

My phones are HTC Diamond2/Magic, if that helps.

I'm doing some tests now so I'll update when I get some results.

Edit: I've used avidemux to encode my video, and the only format that plays is MPEG-4 ASP (lavc).
    MPEG-4 ASP (Xvid) and MPEG-4 AVC (x264) doesn't work.

You might try Any Video Converter Free Version. It has some presets for those types of formats. Generally, encoding speed is directly related to CPU speed and the number of CPU cores, at least with most formats. If you don't mind lower quality, then use a lower video encoding bitrate. That will decrease the encoding time and the file size. Most encoders have that adjustment available. You also need to set the frame size for the video to what works best with your playback device.

    And welcome to our forums.

Thanks, I'll give Any Video Converter a try.

The thing I said about quality, was to avoid fanboys swearing to a certain encoder/converter, because of superior quality.

At the 'heart' of any converter/encoder program is the codec being used for the conversion/encode. After the CPU speed, that's what determines the speed of the encode. And it also determines the quality. And they all have settings.

Many simple converter programs hide them or can only adjust a few parameters. Bitrate is a large factor in encoding speed. Lower bitrate=faster conversion=lower quality. But you only need to set as much quality as your display device is capable of using. You can use five different converter programs and if the codec settings are the same, you should get the same speed, the same quality and the same results with all of them.

  5. Badaboom if you have a decent graphics card. Don't expect great looking output though.

Thanks redwudz and jagabo for the links

I have just tried Badaboom, and on my HTPC(Geforce 9300) I get about 24fps while encoding.
Thats about the same as I get from my CPU in Avidemux and Any Video Converter.
I do have a spare 8600GT that I could use, but I'm not sure if I want to install it, because I'm trying to keep the power consumption low while idle.

    Any ideas on that?
