Right now, I have a Toshiba Tecra A8. I also hae a regular Xbox 360, and a Dazzle DVD Recorder.

I have been told that my computer is too slow/crappy for high quality capture cards, but I would really like some input from "experts." I want the highest quality capture card, in terms of video resolution, that I can get, keeping in mind my crappy computer.

Price is not really an issue, but I don't mind having cheaper options. If I have not been precise enough, please ask me questions about my equipment, and I will answer them to the best of my ability. I am not exactly tech-saavy, but I am not technologically impaired, either.

Thank you for all of your time in advance!

There are many options for 720x480 DVD resolution.

For high definition there are very few, maybe one for that laptop.

The Hauppauge HD-PVR loops HD analog component 720p or 1080i to an HDTV. It hardware encodes to h.264. The issue will be whether your laptop can play the file smoothly. The A8 specs come up a bit short.

Try to get some HD-PVR sample files to test your laptop.

Other options come down to capturing external from your laptop and encoding to a format the laptop will play.

If your laptop have ExpressCard interface then Matrox MXO2 may be an alternative for high definition resolution:

    Try Google.

Maybe someone here can post one. I don't have an HD-PVR. I tested one once but can't find the files.

I Googled "HD-PVR sample file" and found this first.

There's a short file linked at the bottom of this page. Try to find a few more.

It plays jerky in my Athlon 64 dual core notebook using VLC. It plays fine in my Core2 desktop.

yep, but cheap desktop can be cheaper alternative to high bandwidth capture than pure portable/notebook like solutions - i'm not sure that portability is a key on this - if it is "absolutely must" then skip my advice, if not - think on more reliable and cheaper solution - desktop + HDMI card

portable solutions are always compromise (more expensive and less features than non portable)

(assume that XBOX is not very portable so desktop is a valid alternative)
