I have alot of videos i have downloaded. I play them with VLC player. But for some reason the only type that will show a thumbnail is the .wmv files. The ones that dont show a thumbnail is the .avi and .mp4 files. They all play fine with vlc. But i would like to have the thumbnails.

I also have realplayer, quicktime, and divx player installed.

    Running Vista 64bit

    Any ideas?

I guess you mean thumbnails in windows file explorer?
Can you play avi and mp4 files in windows media player? If not you need codecs for that like ffdshow.

Yes in windows explorer sorry. I can play .avi and mp4 with windows media player. I installed this Haali Media Splitter thing, so they both play with wmp, but all i see in my video folder is the *cone* VLC icons instead of thumbnails.

Dont know if this helps or not, as i dont know what i am doing, but when i open one of my mp4 videos in wmp, and go to file properties, this is the video codec it is using DivX H.264 Decoder

OK i have installed and un installed every codec pack that i can find, and none of them will make the mp4 show thumbnails. Im sure i have messed up by doing it, but its driving me nuts. I have windows media player, quicktime, vlc, flv player, realplayer and they all play all my videos, so im lost as to why i see icons instead of thumbs.

Sorry, just wanted to add that i installed ffdshow and shark007 codecs for vista 32 and 64 bit. Now all files play with windows media player and all files have thumbnails except mp4`s. So if anyone has an idea of how to show mp4 thumbnail, i would REALLY appreciate it
