Is there a way to simply use your soundcard as an amplifier with a line-in source? I don't need to record the incoming sound I just want it to be played through the soundcard.

I finally confirmed my settings are correct and i can record and capture the sound. So I know it is connected properly. I just want to be able to play the source through the soundcard without any apps - just so I can listen to it through the computer.

I have a creative xfi xtreme gamer fatality pro soundcard.

    Thanks.

Edit - fyi I'm using this on a vista 32bit pc by the way.

edit 2 - I had forgotten about a "stereo mix" function in vista that lets you control the line in mic in volume output. I can see the line in and it does record but I don't have passthrough control.

Edit 3 - Ok I got it to play with audacity and played it while it was recording. However that only worked with my zune. I am trying to play my ps3 through the soundcard and no go. I have the normal rca audio cables hooked up and selected as the audio source in the playsation menu. I do not get any sound at all. I am not sure why it would work with the zune and not the ps3. Both are connected the same way when I swap them out.

Edit 4 - ALMOST THERE!!! It turns out I had the a/b switch set to the wrong input selector from the ps3!! Doh! But now it is getting sound from the ps3. I used Audacity with the passthrough mode on. I recorded then paused so as not to record a file I don't need. I swithced my tv to the ps3 input (computer and ps3 are using hdtv as monitor). I got it to work!

HOWEVER - there is a noticeable lag. It appears to be maybe a full second behind. Probably less. If I can get the soundcard to simply relay the audio as it comes without relying on recording software I will have exactly what I want - bluetooth headphones with my ps3 for movie/game audio - though of course game audio would not be possible with game chat since these are the only headset I have that would work with the ps3 - but one thing at a time.

So if anyone has suggestions for solving this nagging delay issue I'll be all set. But its sweet that I've made it this far without any extra equipment that I didn't already have prior to the purchase of the bluetooth headset - I already had my usb bluetooth dongle.

    Thanks everyone...

I think (in your case) its tricky, like in mine.

    1. double click the speaker icon on the taskbar (far right)
    2. \options\properties
    3. scroll down to where you see Rear Blue, and select its check box [x]
    4. when it adds it to the speaker's timeline, it may be muted, just uncheck it

If it doesn't work, then you may have to alternatve with the other selections: front; rear; woofer; center; etc.

But thats usually the situation with newer sound card setups, at least in mine. Whether or not you have it set as surround sound, this is how you have to configure the line-in to work (to record from) and this is what I use under windows xp home, my video work station.

I also have the X-fi Surround 5.1 (the larger black unit with the dial on it) but haven't connected that up yet.

Hadn't thought of that. Thanks. I'll try tinkering with it more. My only problem could be lag time from the ps3 to the computer to the bluetooth headsets. It might make movie watching and game play untennable - edit - by the way apparently the ps3 is not going to be able to output main sound to the bluetooth headset - chat use only per xylob and the headset doesn't appear as a main sound output only in the chat menu.

Is that one of the external usb units? I have the internal pci card.
