Samsung BD-3600 will not play DVD's written with Nero.
I've only found one exception that works.

    The message says:

    THE DISK CANNOT BE PLAYED.
    PLEASE CHECK THE TV SYSTEM.

    I have tried DVD-R/DVD-R media.

All of the DVD's were TS-VIDEO files burned with Nero.

They play in a 12 year old Panasonic and another more recent model. I have tried both DVD+R and DVD-R with the same results.

So far, I have only found one DVD that plays. It is a Superman 1948 cartoon DVD. I cannot be sure if the source was an ISO or TS-VIDEO file.

Is it possible that all of the DVD's that don't play are in PAL format? How would I tell? This might be consistent with the error message. The 1948 cartoon DVD might not have been released in Europe. I'm grasping at straws.

I have updated the firmware and everything works except playing my Nero DVD's. So far, only this one exception.

Samsung was no help. The message wasn't in the manual and the support people didn't know what to do. We went through a reset of the player but that only killed my network settings.

    Suggestions?

I suspect if you put commercial dvds in your player they may not work either. I have seen a number of others complaining anout the same thing. In the case of PAL dvds most players will play them unless their region encoded. Most solved the problem by rolling back the firmware.

    Makes NO difference.

Wouldn't the original DVD packaging say NTSC or PAL? Just load the original DVD in
DVDDecrypter.. It willl tell you if the material on the DVD is NTSC or PAL.

I don't have packaging that says PAL/NTSC becasue the DVD source was TS-Video posted via Usenet and burnt with Nero.

How do I find out? Will DVDDecrypter report on PAL/NTSC? If it's PAL, I'm screwed because of the number of DVD's I've downloaded. I can't re-burn all of them. I've got multiple seasons of a certain 60's space show that had several spinnoff series.

I'm going to feel stupid hooking up my old DVD player on top of my new SAMSUNG BD3600 just to play my old DVD collection from Usenet.

I can still get store credit and purchase another player but only the LG390 (currently unavailable at Best Buy) offered PC video streaming and Netflix.

Maybe I should return it, use my old non-Blue-Ray DVD player and eat the cost of the three BD titles I've bought so far.

I focused on PC streaming and Netflix and assumed it would play my old DVD's. Pooh.

stonejg - You need a region free DVD player. Samsung doesn't make them anymore, at least not in the USA and Canada. hech54's post describes what has happened. You'd be best off to buy something that you are absolutely sure can be made region free. At this time your options are rather limited. A few Philips players are rumored to still be able to be made region free. Oppo (http://www.oppodigital.com) makes a couple of expensive BluRay players that can be made region free if you change the firmware yourself. HKflix used to sell a couple of Momitsu BluRay players that shipped to you already region free, but I just checked and they no longer sell hardware. Looks like Hollywood got to them already.

That's the problem with downloading shit....you never know what you are going to get.
Re-burning isn't going to help anything...if they are PAL format then they are PAL format.
Some players convert PAL to NTSC on the fly....most don't nowadays....and none of the manufacturers really advertised that function.
Put a disc on your drive....open DVDDecrypter in IFO Mode and the box to your right will tell you whether the contents of the DVD are NTSC or PAL formats.

Thanks for all of the help. I gave up on the Samsung 3600 and traded it in for a LG390.
Interface is cleaner, remote is less cluttered and it works with everything I threw at it.
