If you can stretch your budget to $100 I'd suggest the WDTV. It will play pretty much anything you throw at it from a thumb drive or external hard drive.

According to many Amazon.com reviews.....your player already plays all of those except "WM"(I'm guessing you mean Windows WMV?). It's what is INSIDE the .AVI file that you need to verify. Many describe .AVI as a "container" in which you can put many different combinations of video and audio....not just Divx/Xvid which the Philips supports.

  7. I agree with freebird, the WD media player or Seagate FreeAgent is your best bet.

  8. Philips 5990 or 5992, lots of topics on these if you look & they made custom firmware.

Changing players will not guarantee that you can play "the other half" of the files you
say the Philips cannot play....especially since you do not seem to know what video codec
is used in those files that won't play. There are several very good free programs that will tell
you exactly what video codec is in that file that will not play. GSpot is one of them.
Do some homework before you buy. The next player may play the other half of the
video files....but not the ones your present player plays...

I am using currently Sony DVP-NS710H/B. It's an awesome standalone player.

    You need to read this

I have the old DVP-642 too. Every single one of the things in this list is a problem for this player. Many/some of them will be problems for ANY player that you buy. WMV support is very rare. WMA support is less rare.

The Sony recommended by bulava doesn't state any ability to play any of the formats you mentioned. I would not recommend any Sony player given their constant anti-consumer stance, lack of quality and inability of the players to be made region free.

Your price range is not realistic. You'd do better to save up a little and follow MOVIEGEEK's advice. DVD players are significantly more fussy about what they will play than media players are. I haven't fully tested my oldish WD TV player, but I can only think of one potential Divx issue in that list above that might be a problem for the WD TV player and that's the use of GMC with 3 warp points. Even that might work, but I don't know.
