Hi, I've been going nuts this week trying to figure things out with how to convert a h264/mkv into an avi/xvid. I finally finished that, but when I went back to use VirtualDub for a mp4 file (the DirectShow plugin always worked fine) it would not open it. It opened them in the past just fine, but not today. So I ended up removing VirtualDub/Quicktime/ffdshow and reinstalling things.

For the most part, my mp4 files are opening again in VirtualDub (though there's a delay that wasn't there before). However, I have some new mp4 files (audio: AAC) that it simply will not read. No matter what I choose (All types, DirectShow, Quicktime) to open it, it tells me it's unable to open and there's a "NewMovieFromFile" error, then below is a bunch of scrambled letters (starts with the folder the file is in, then I can see the phrase MP4system32\cmd.exe

What's wrong and what can I do to fix this so this file will work in VDub? It plays in VLC/WMP. When I open it in Quicktime it says "Error -2002: a bad public movie atom was found in the movie"

    Thanks

Does the mp4 play in windows media player?
Are you using virtualdub 64 bit version?

And do you have to use virtualdub? Other software like avidemux may work better and have lots of same features as virtualdub.

    Yeah it plays in WMP.
I am not using the 64 bit version. I originally installed that and it wasn't working right so I got rid of it for the 32 bit.

I guess I can use avidemux for these files, but I don't like it as much.

When I open it in avidemux the audio is stuttering really bad, and seeking through the file is very unreliable. I saved a shortened version (cut some stuff out to make a small clip) and there were some big gray patches on the screen when it would transition from one cut to the next.

Are there any other programs out there?
