    Hey everyone,

I was recently given a 2 year old HP Pavilion desktop PC, model a6220n. I want to use it as a HTPC with my HDTV and surround sound system. However, since it is an older computer, I am worried that it won't play all the newer HD formats smoothly. If that is the case, I would like to use it as a server for music and videos.

Is this computer's hardware and software strong enough to play HD formats like AVCHD, blu-ray discs, xvid, hdv, etc (anything current/near future)?

    Specs for HP a6220n:

    Intel Core 2 Duo E4500
    2 GB ddr2 ram
    400 gb hdd
    Intel GMA x3100 graphics

here's a link from HP site:

    Thanks for the help!

You probably need a better graphics card. The CPU should be enough for 1080p.

    thanks, Baldrick!

would someone recommend a gpu? possibly fanless?
I know it really boils down to whether I'll be gaming or not.... so, lets say possibly... Haha.
Yes, I might game, but I don't care too much about graphics in games, just playability. The HDTV is 1080p resolution, FYI.

    Thanks again!

Here's a few suggestions for a low end video card that can playback 1080p:

I've used this Gigabyte ATI HD 4350 on a few builds. I use one on my Q9550 system and it does well with 1080p. I don't game so I can't give you any opinion on that.

    thanks, budz.

What is needed to get video AND audio to go to the TV over HDMI? does it connect to my mobo's onboard sound or do I need a special sound card?

    thanks!
