  2. You probably will have a feature in your start up folder like with Acer laptops where you can reinstall everything. This is where the hidden partition comes in and you make your recovery disc from and driver disc.

I deleted hidden partition on my Acer for extra space as drivers were on a previous disc and I had a system recovery disc. My computer still recognised everything and recovered easily despite not having preinstaled partition. Must be default in bios settings or chip.

Also, without the recovery partition or discs, you won't have an OS to place on that hard drive if you reformat, unless you have a retail full Windows setup disc.
Note that the retail discs will not be able to use the product key/license that should be on the bottom of laptops and sides/top/back of desktops. "Data error (cyclical redundancy check)", this means that the the drive is corrupt or defective. You need to run chkdsk. I don't have a win7 system here in front of me, however if it works like XP/Vista then.... Open my computer (computer). Right click on your removable drive, choose properties, then the tools tab, error checking, check now, automatically fix errors. the CRC error means that the checksums are not matching and you may not be able to copy a file like that easily. Have you been stopping the drive or shutting down the computer before disconnecting it?
If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.

Once in a while, it does not allow me to properly disconnect it, so I will just shut it off. I didnt know there is an option to right click properties and tools tab to do error checking. Most people said you have to go through CMD to CHKDSK but I wasn't sure.

I assume you have to run as an administrator to convert FAT32 to NTSC otherwise it will not work?

  5. OK I have almost moved the entire RECOVERY file (13 GB size) to my external HD. But I receive a message at the end,

"You will need permission to perform this action" on the System Volume Information.

How do I run as admin? I right click on the CMD prompt and ran as admin when I was converting FAT32 to NTSC. When I right click my F: drive (where the external HD sits on), it doesn't allow me to select admin mode. Am I missing something or is this warning standard?

  6. Anyone might have some insight as to what this above message means? I have tried searching online but did not find anything.

You probably have to actually be logged in as the administrator user on that system to perform some of those tasks.

  8. Hey Ai, that is what I thought. But when I go to start and log off user, there is only one name under there- My name. I have Windows 7

Isnt there usually two names- the personal name + admin?

If I remember correctly, the administrator account(s) in XP is usually 'hidden,' so it doesn't show up on the user selection screen. I haven't done much admin-related work on any XP systems (that I can recall), so I don't remember how to 'un-hide' the admin accounts. (I'd read how to do it at one point, I believe, but that was a long time ago.)

What action where you performing when you got the error? A drag drop copy, running a backup program, etc? Is the 13GB a single file or the total space used on your recovery drive. If the total space on the recovery drive, you must have tried moving the "System Volume Information" folder, you cant move that folder, you wont need it ether.

Also, if the 13GB is the total of all the files on the recovering drive, just coping/moving the files to your external drive is only good to have copy's of the files on the recovery drive; but to properly backup a partition, you should use one of the backup programs already suggested.

  11. The action I am doing is trying to do a copy and paste of the recovery file from the hard drive. This is contains all the backup stuff that my laptop came with. I just want to ensure, in case my HD crashes, that I have some back up copy.

Are you saying that a copy and paste of the recovery file (13 GB large) is not going to work? I need to properly back up the entire partition?

The safest way to back a partition is to use one of the backup software suggested already. Not knowing what format the 13gb is in, one cant know if its would be okay just to copy it. Call support for your Laptop and ask them how you cant backup the recovering partition (safely) in case of a hard disk failure.
