  1. Can anyone help me with cropping a video file? I've been using assorted free editors that support video cropping, but none of them seem to do what i want.

Before i go any further, i'm not talking about cropping the timeline, i'm talking about cropping the size of the frame. I've made a video (1.3GB mpg 1920x1080 - about 8min) with Cyberlink Power Director which automatically put a black border around my video. I've recently learned that they call it a letterhead and it's function is to play on standard NTSC TV's so the video isn't cut off. But this video isn't intended for a TV...I'm just trying to make a HD video for YouTube.

Now, i have tried various FREE editors that claim they will do this, but the video still renders the border everytime.....i don't get it.

Does anyone know of a program that can do this with ease.....and that absolutely works??? Here are some pics to show my problem......

The editor I've used that seems to be easiest to crop with is TMPGenc 4.0 XPress.

Most serious editors address this issue with selection of project format.

taking a brief view of the user manual it appears that you can select either of 2 options as an output ie 4:3 0r 16:9. So any cropping of individual clips will be done within either a 4:3 or 16:9 frame. This limitation is fairly normal for an entry level editor. VirtualDub is your best choice IMO and it's free - check the instructions for VirtualDub as cropping can be done as a stream copy and won't involve recoding.
If you want a more friendly front end program than VirtualDub take a look at the Google service YouTube remixer http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/06/16/youtube-remixer-edit-videos-online-at-youtube/

EDIT: If you have Womble you can do it using the clip menu. Make your clip and then crop it (video -filter -cropping) - then "add" it to clips and then select "trim clip" which brings up a save box - so it won't be re-encoded just saved as you have cropped. It will name the clip whatever001.mpg

    No, it will require reencoding.
