I got an old Compaq PC with dual boot OS. Originally, Win 2000 was pre-installed. Then Win XP Pro was installed as dual boot. I want to uninstall the XP. I also got the XP CD which I want to install in a new PC. I will give away the old one with only Win 2000 installed. The Win2000 recovery disc is gone.

I guess I might call Microsoft to activate the XP, if necessary. Thanks.

format the hard drive and get rid of everything. only re-install w2000 if you have the original install disc and legit m.s. sticker and serial number. otherwise give it away with a blank hard drive.

  3. Edit BOOT.INI in the root of the boot drive. Remove references to the XP partition.

Make sure your XP CD isn't OEM or it may not install or activate on the new computer.

Securely wipe the drive using DBAN or something similar.
You cannot control who will have access to the computer, and the chances are good that personal information resides somewhere on that hard drive.

Even if no personal information is on it, it's almost certain that the drive will contain junk from previous installs/uninstalls, broken DLLs, and software the recipient wouldn't need or want.

Wipe the drive, then donate the computer and the W2K disc(s) with the peace of mind in knowing that you have eliminated any possibility of your identity and personal information being compromised.

As much as possible, I want to give it with OS. To my nephew. I will just search and delete the docs and txt. And wipe it out. I heard even a formatted disk can be accessed by a determined hacker. So be it.

I''ll try Jagabo's suggestion. Thanks guys.
