  1. Is there a definitve way to set the above typres of conversion ?
Just when I think I've got it cracked, it converts it in a different way than what I thought I was setting.
I'm trying to convert from 16:9 to 4:3 so that I can have full screen on my telly, sometimes it works just fine and everything comes out just perfect, with full screen and no margin perfectly scaled.
I then do another film using the same settings and it ends up as a wide-screen 16:9 again.
Is there a way to fix this or does it matter what the original movie was, in how it is going to convert ?
    Baffled
    Chris.

some movies are so-called pan&scan; those will go to 4:3 without any problems
Others you gotta cut off the black bars with the crop tool.
The source settings; and the output settings got to be right in any case; also the "magin mode" is important; just try out a couple of test settings; you'll find what you need in a shorter time that way then to just code the whole movie

I'll do as you suggest and do a just a small bit of the movie to get the settings right .
    Cheers

The reason pan and scan movies "convert" OK is because they have already been converted into 4:3 format by the manufacturer.

To convert from widescreen (16:9) into full screen (4:3) is unfortunately a case of simple maths. The movie is too wide too fit the screen so you either have to letterbox it (by putting black bars on the top and bottom) or try your own attempt at the pan and scan process (by actually cropping out some of the movie.
