    I have a new JVC Blu-Ray player and see that it can play AVCHD formatted disks.

    Is there a way to rip a DVD to that format? (H.264 Video / AC3 audio)

    you could try multiAVCHD, but it won't look any better than the dvd, and most likely worse.
