  1. What is this piece of hardware intended for? Encoding? Sound production? Gaming?

I'm aware there is system performance improvements, but what is the main technical use for this hardware?

What sort of cool things can you do with it?

(Does this interact well with premiere CS4?)

Sort of. It's mostly marketing gimmick since most any Soundblaster X-Fi use identical EAX decoders but the idea is it offloads the audio decoding work from your system to the card when EAX is used (which is present in almost every game these days it seems). Usually these extended options are unavailable until you have a card with EAX. EAX has a lot of neat things when gaming in surround like precise sound panning and the like. I don't think any of the Adobe apps use EAX so I don't think you'll see much of a difference there unless you have a really poor audio component to your PC. Any onboard HD audio component should suffice for Soundbooth.

That specific version also has some additional input/outputs and features if you want to control your audio separate from the system (it has a remote control, doesn't it?). It isn't a bad sound card underneath all the marketing fluff but you can get away with cheaper for the same performance, unless you want all those additional features.
