  1. I keep getting an error message from convertx2dvd. Never had a problem using this or the youtube downloader to convert flv files - until about six months ago.

Now using an updated version of youtube download manager and it saves a flv double in size compared to the one in the browsers cache. Why is that? No errors using these programs now but it's the thought of the flv file being converted again prior you know? Hate this extra step.

What error message are you getting from ConvertX2DVD? (I don't use it, myself, so I probably won't be of as much help.)

As for the 'double-size' FLVs, the downloader probably defaults to saving the "higher quality" versions of the videos as opposed to the 'normal' versions. (Those would be a better version to get, anyway, if you are indeed looking to convert them for DVD.)
If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?

    Hi,

Here's an example from convertx2dvd error log:

12/14/2009 10:07:27 PM warning File "C:\Faith No More @ Pukkelpop Patton embarrasses VIP's.flv" ignored. Unrecoverable error while reading.

I think when a flv video file is 16x9 it causes this problem. Installed the ffdshow codec but still get the error message if it tries to open an flv copied from my opera browser cache.

Try giving the file a short 8:3 filename (eight letters, plus the . and three-character extension), without spaces or the @ symbol - just letters (and numbers, if you prefer), and see if ConvertX2DVD has any problems reading the file, then.

If that doesn't work, try running the file through a utility like MediaInfo, using Tree View, and copy and paste the resulting information here.

  5. Hi and thanks again for helping, Ai Haibara.

I renamed the original file to eight characters as flashtest.flv and it still would not open in convertx2dvd. Also I was wrong about the 16x9 thing, this video was 4x3.

Here is the text log of the renamed file and the same vid downloaded with youtube downloader. This time YD saved a file smaller than the one from cache, 18mb vs 24mb.

I think it was about then that Youtube switched to using AVC video in an FLV container.
I don't know anything about ConvertXtoDVD, but perhaps it doesn't support this combination (or maybe the latest one does and you have an older version).

Your MediaInfo data also suggests that could be the problem - the file that works is an mp4 container, not flv.
