IMHO I'd stay away from refurbished ram. If you want cheap ram look at your local craigslist ads. I've bought used ram from craigslist without any problems.

Refurbished is returned and re-certified as good or like-new. Sometimes this was a customer return, but more often it was pre-sales returns (damage in-store or in shipment). Problems can range from destroyed packaging to item scratches, all the way to total device fail (and a part was simply replaced). The term varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Most manufacturers won't share info on this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refurbishment_%28electronics%29

I buy refurb equipment all the time. It has always been like-new, better than anything used. It arrives clean and in working order. At most, some items have scratches. In all cases, the original box was gone, it came in a generic white or brown box. The worst item I ever got was a DVD burner that had some tape on the case, and I removed it with some alcohol.

Thanks. I did hear from my tech guru that, "No one refurbishes ram. Or anything else. That means it is not new, as in it has been sold before and returned and checked. All that matters is that it is a good brand."

Thing is that this is really odd ball RAM. It's ECC, unbuffered and non registered. I'm going to give it a try. They says it tested and it's from a memory supplier. I will check with memtest86 and let you know.

Some RAM may also be pulls from recycled computers. Many companies (And government) shred the HDDs when they recycle PCs to avoid data getting into the wrong hands. The PC isn't worth recycling and resale then if it's on a lease, so maybe the RAM and other parts are salvaged. But that's just a guess.

Make sure it's the same type of memory that's in your workstation. If you're running that HP Z800 then it is going to be very particular about its memory.

Actually the RAM is for HP XW4100's. I have three and each of my kids has one. It's $39 a one gig stick delivered. PC vs server RAM - PC3200, DDR400, ECC, CL3, Non-registered, unbuffered, 184 pin DIMM's. I also picked up an Nvida FX3000 for $47 delivered. I have one and they are top of the line for the XW4100's. The XW4100's are vintage 2003 running XP with 3.2 pent, but great machines. I use them for burning and surfing.

Buying from craigslist would not be my personal recommendation. Good luck with a refund if you have problems. You pays your money and you takes your chances.

Lmao! The ram I bought off craigslist were all fine. In fact the dude I buy from tests them as well. All ram tested well using the latest version 4.00 of memtest. I run the ram testing for 4hours or longer. Don't knock craigslist. I sell a lot of stuff on there and I don't rip people off. Yuh, I take my chances buying from there but I'm not a idiot! I live in Honolulu and we're a small island where word of mouth goes around fast if you're ripping off peeps on craigslist!
