I'm going to be installing a new CPU some time soon and would like know anything important before doing so. You know, such as the paste and stuff. I also have a pretty nice heat sink and think that I may use the stock that comes with the processor but I'll give a link so you can give your opinions.

    My setup:

    Motherboard: ASRock K10N78
    http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=K10N78

    CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 630 Propus 2.8GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Processor

Heat Sink: Thermaltake - 120mm CPU Cooling Fan
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Thermaltake+-+120mm+CPU+Cooling+Fan/8990489.p?id=121800708...&skuId=8990489

    Thanks for any help

When I use the Arctic Silver do I use it all? and do I spread some on top of the CPU and the heat sink?

Also that heat sink looks pretty big lol, must work pretty good tho.

    thanks for the reply

The Arctic Silver, you will use very little, about the size of a pea........Then you spread it out in the CPU only.....

    Nice Video here :

Arctic Silver is the stuff...but this is one of those situations where too much is as good as too little. The pea size recommendation is correct.

Ideally, you want about the thickness of one layer of magazine page before compressing the heatsink against the CPU. The thermal compound is only to fill the imperfections between the CPU and the heatsink. Less is better.

    From Arctic Silver: http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm

Most new CPU heatsinks come with tape type thermal compound. It works well enough for most users. If not, you can wash it off with 99% isopropyl alcohol after scraping off the majority with a plastic credit card, being careful not to scratch the heatsink surface.

IMHO I'd use Artic Cooler MX-2 thermal paste...I use to use Artic Silver but with today's newer cpu's MX-2 & MX 3 is the preferred thermal paste along with IC-7 and OC Freeze.

I'm biased so I'll suggest to you to buy a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus. It's been getting good reviews and it has a solid bracket where's today's newer cpu coolers are heavy and huge. I use the Cooler Master Hyper 212 first generation cpu cooler.

  10. I'm using an OCZ Vendetta 2 for my C2Q Q9550. The Vendetta 2 is the same physical size as the Hyper 212 Plus. I used Arctic Silver MX-2. Great stuff. My CPU temps range from 20-40 C depending on how much of a load I'm putting on my system. Normally the temps hover around 30.
