    Hello.

Last Spring, I purchased a Zenith XBR716 VHS VCR from RadioShack. Despite negative reviews on Amazon.com, the unit has always worked well for me. VHS to DVD transfers were top notch, and the DVD recorder works really well. But, last August, the unit would no longer power on so I sent it in to LG's service depot for warranty repair.

I had my unit returned to me repaired in late September. The DVD Recorder still works great, but the VHS portion of the unit no longer works as it should. Tapes will load and play, but the tracking is off on every tape I insert into it. The picture keeps rolling and jumping, and when I do get the picture stable, there is still fuzziness near the top of the screen. I already tried a couple head cleaners to no avail.

Are the VHS heads in my unit somehow misaligned after the factory repair? How can I fix this?

The alignment is fubar. It may have happened during return shipment.

I would argue "top notch" on the quality.

Well, I was talking about the quality of the recordings themselves, not that of the unit.

Any way I could align the heads myself, or would I have to take it in to RadioShack or some other place?

You'd need to take it to a video repair shop. Neither you nor RadioShack can do it properly, no.

Well, no, you didn't do it right. But welcome to the forum anyway. In the future, it's probably a good idea to start your own thread on a specific problem rather than hijack another thread that is 5 years old.

Considering that capturing old home VHS tapes directly to DVD is one of the worst ways of archiving VHS, and considering in other respects that with your current skill level with this sort of thing and the time it would take you to get up to snuff, you're much better off finding a good outfit to do it for you. Caution: by "good outfit" we don't mean Kodak. Try the services at www.digitalfaq.com .

    Shut up you arrogant prick.
He never said "archiving"....and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Yes he should have started his own thread but a grandfather doesn't need a lecture from a newbie little prick like you.

    paintlover:
Look harder for a finalize option on your recorder. That would be the first step in problem solving.
