m4v to DV

[jscape2000]

So I work for a dance company and we had a DVD made of our performance. We'd like to send an excerpt of that off as part of a grant proposal, and I'd like to use iMovie to insert chapter marks in the spots the panel should view.

I used Handbrake to get the file off the DVD as an m4v- that went well. I've used ffmpeg to convert m4vs to DV in the past- what's not working?

I would try mpeg streamclip. And it can also convert directly from the dvd to a dv file.


And I'm moving you to our mac section.

Yup, Baldrick hit it on the head.
If you have the performace on DVD,
then simply insert the DVD into your mac,
and use MpegStreamclip to extract the footage back the HD
in DV Stream format.
Import that into iMovie and then do what you need to do.

going to m4v will just cause you hassle, because iMovie
will either have to (a) reject it, asking for a more compatible file,
or (b) re-encode it to DV Stream for editing.
