I have installed ffmpegx and followed the instructions to convert a video. When I go to convert it, the conversion progress bar goes to complete in about 1 sec (it's a large video so not possibe) and there are no files in the output directory

    Any ideas would be appreciated

Post the log file for examination on any errors. You may access this log by clicking the blue "i" in the ffmpegX Progress window after a conversion attempt.

ffmpeg cannot decode RM, you'll need a mencoder preset.

I've just had the same issue with a mencoder preset, myself. I'm converting from .avi to h.246 mencoder, and it only took a second to ding.

It doesn't really matter to me what the output is, though, so long as it's .avi of some sort in its final stage, without any noticeable quality drop. I was trying XviD mencoder before this and the exported files became quite grainy. Despite playing with various settings under the Video and Options tabs, I haven't had much luck finding a way to export that I'm satisfied with.

I'm using ffmpegX for the purpose of subtitling only, so I really don't want a change in video quality. End size doesn't matter to me either... I'm really newbie at this and I don't find it intuitive, so does anyone have any suggestions as to good target formats and settings? I'd appreciate it! Meanwhile, I'll keep tinkering to see if I can find something that works...

H.264 mencoder won't output as AVI, but as MP4.

For AVI output with burned-in subs, keep the preset at XviD mencoder.

If output size is no real concern, then just optimize the quantizer values in the Options tab, for high quality output: Qmin=2, Qmax=2. That should do it.
