  1. I just recorded a tv show on my toshiba dvr. I finalized the dvd and now i want to edit out the commercials on my pc but my dvd drive (LG) wont read the dvd. I dont get an error message it just doesnt show up on my computer. If I try to explore the dvd drive nothing shows up, it is as if there is no dvd in the drive.

  3. Problem solved, I hooked up another dvd drive and it read the dvd. Looks like LG is really picky, mignt just use the old dvd drive, only bought the LG because it has lightscribe, thats $80 wasted, oh well live and learn and guess.

Don't get too attached to that Lightscribe capability. I got into Lightscribe a few (3? 4? Don't remember.) years ago because at that time Lightscribe was relatively cheap and printers that could print directly on discs were quite expensive ($300 US at the time). I was a big supporter of Lightscribe but I have since turned on the format. Why?
    1) I bought 3 different Lightscribe drives and in EVERY ONE OF THEM they all eventually developed problems burning CDs and/or DVDs. I'm not talking about Lightscribe labels, I'm talking about burning data to the discs. The first thing to go in all of my drives was the ability to burn DL media successfully. DL burns with my Lightscribe drive either failed half the time or almost all the time. With time the drive got worse and worse. Two couldn't burn CDs correctly but could burn single layer DVDs without problem. One drive couldn't burn DVDs at all but could burn CDs and Lightscribe labels.
    2) No matter what you do, the labels don't ever really burn dark enough. I one time burned a label twice and it did indeed make it dark enough, but my drive was never the same after that. Lightscribe manufacturers don't advise burning twice, but they also don't say it may harm a drive to do so.
    3) The best case burn with any kind of dark result is 20+ minutes. That's just crazy for a single burn.
    4) Despite optimal storing conditions (no temperature and humidity extremes, no direct sunlight) some of my Lightscribe labels are already fading. Eventually they will not be readable at all. I expect all of them to fade eventually, but I have only seen this problem on a minority of discs. Note that it's not supposed to happen, but it does. In fact, there's a lot of bad things with Lightscribe that aren't supposed to happen but somehow do.

Remember that a store bought unit may not have the latest firmware and it is usually this which cause's these issues

Lg's here have proven to be the most dependable of all other brands after they had firmware updates applied

My 3 LG drives read anything I throw at them...and they recognize all of the available space of oversized CD media. I'll keep buying them.
