  1. Hi,

I'm not sure if this is in the correct section so if it isn't could you please move to correct section,

    Anyway, my question is,

I've been looking in to a way of backing up XBOX games so they are playable without having to mod the XBOX in any way and I came across this page, http://howtocopyxbox360games.blogspot.com/

Has anyone had any success in backing up their games with this or any other method and been able to get them to play on an unmodded XBOX.

I would appreciate your opinions before I give it a try and potentially waste a few discs,

    Thanks in advance

Note that "xbox" and "xbox360" are two different consoles ... and as for the link you provided it's complete rubbish ... a rip off

Xbox must have a modchip installed

Xbox360 however has a few tricks ... read here ... all you need to know and software for free

Xbox does not have to have a modchip,it can be soft modded using a game exploit that alows a linux system to be loaded.

  4. Xbox uses a special drive that runs in reverse, you can't copy them without a special drive of some type.

    The regular Xbox ?

I know you need a special samsung drive with special firmware to rip 360 games, which you can buy online relatively cheap, but i always thought you could rip regular xbox games on any old drive ?

But even the samsung drives needed to rip 360 games run the same as any standard drive as they are originally sold for PC's as standard readers, as far as i ever knew.
Some one/group hacked the firmware to flash them to read 360 disc's.

I never had a regular xbox so i never really delved into the specifics.

And yes, those pages selling that crap are scams & or ripoffs.

If you get the specific samsung drive flashed with special firmware you can then rip your 360 games, but you still need your 360 drive flashed with special firmware to play the backups.

I have a 250 GB Seagate in my Regular XBox and have about 40 games saved on it. No Chip. Mech Assault Game (Original) is a must. (Not Greatest Hits).

The drive required is the Samsung SH-D162 using the Kron firmware ... and once this is done the drive is almost useless for doing anything else but xbox, xbox360 backups ... I bought 2 in ebay for $55 ea ... beware of idiot sellers saying the C version is just the updated version ... its not

The sofmod trick requires you to obtain certain games in order to use the exploit where copies can be played and dose allow for larger HD's to be installed but what a lot of work ... modchip is so much easier.

For those interested in "softmod" for the original xbox console go here ... all you need

    Drives supported:

    Benq VAD6038 - FW: ix16-0800
    LiteOn DG-16D2S - FW: ix16-0800
    Samsung SH-D162C -FW: KREON V1.00
    Samsung SH-D162D - FW: KREON V1.00
    Samsung SH-D163A - FW: KREON V1.00
    Samsung SH-D163B - FW: KREON V1.00
    Toshiba-Samsung TS-H943 - FW: ix16-0800

All samsung drives are PC units, the rest are console drives

Where does one go to have a modchip installed. 360 XBox. Can you just flash the firmware for the drive you have? Is there a lot of soldering with the chip mentioned above?

Maybe not, but Kreon has the specific firmware for the Samsung SH-D162C drives, and i don't see any difference.

I think it's much better to flash your 360 rather then put a modchip in it.
It's not that hard if you are comfortable with electronics or working on PC hardware & have the right hardware to flash your drive, but you MUST use the right firmware for your 360 drive as M$ used several different drives for the 360.

There are tut's out there, just search youtube and there are some good step by step videos, just investigate & study and don't just go by the first one you come across.

It is noted by the creator of Kreon that the SH-D162C is not able to correct an important function and is not recommended

For the xbox its softmod known as SlaYers_EvoX_Auto-Installer_2.7 ... around 230mbs

Earlier optical drives for the xbox360's had firmware patch's

I used to rip my XBOX games on the XBOX itself, and then copy the ripped files across the network to the computer, and use a special tool to rebuild the XISO and burn to DVD.

I did mine for backups, because those XBOX discs seemed to scratch too easy. Sometimes they seemed to warp from hours and hours of playing, too. Most times, I just left the copy on the hard drive, for faster load times. Swapped out for a 300GB drive.

  13. Thanks for the reply's so far......and yes I should have been more specific !
I actually mean't to state that I was asking about the 360...sorry for the confusion.

I did think that those websites selling that software were a scam, that's why I thought I would ask first....didn't think it was that easy to do.

My XBOX is brand new so don't want to start pulling it apart just to save a few quid yet so think I will just have to be very careful with the disc's for now, and make sure my kid's dont destroy them !!

I also read that you can potentially get banned from XBOX Live if they detect you are using a copy disc and dont want that to happen.

Please keep your thought's coming anyway as I would be interested to see what can be done and maybe I'll get hold of a second hand box to play with without the fear of bricking it

  14. If you want to save your disks, just copy the game to your xbox 360 HD & play it from there. You do have to have the disk in your drive to play from hd but it reads from the hd after that.

I have the SH-D163B flashed with the Kreon firmware and it still works fine for everything normal, playing/ripping dvd's, cd's, ect.

That kind of defeats the purpose of this thread, if you still have to get your original disc's out and have them in the drive to play the game

The purpose is to keep your original disc's put up out of harms way, kind of like when my 22yr old's puppy got a hold of a couple of my Hogans Heroes season 1 disc's and destroyed them!!

He's damn lucky they were my backups!!!!

If you want to "rip" the originals to your PC to burn back to DL+R media, you have to have a special drive in/hooked to your pc.

Not just any drive will read original 360 disc's.

    EDIT:
And from what I see, those are original Xbox games NOT 360 games.

You can read a little about the drive needed from this link

You'll also find links to software used on the pc, lower on the page.

    Free software, yes.
    Xbox Backup Creator

Other than buying an actual 360 drive, Benq or Liteon, then flashing it with special firmware, then buying the hardware needed to hook it to a pc, there is no way around reading/ripping 360 games.

I have a few drives for ripping original 360 games but because of the newer extra copy protection/checks on newer games you have to have one of the drives I listed, the same as Bjs linked to.

That's just the way it is.
