    Hi all,

I am still on the rampage for finding the best/most reliable video editing software available. I have been recording HD content from my DVR to my PC and I would like to edit this and burn to Blu Ray. I would also like the capability to upscale SD to HD. I would like to know what others have tried for software and stuck with. It seems I get excited to almost purchase software only to find out it has horrible reviews. I want to know what the "pro's" use (all of you!!). Please help!!

    Sony Vegas version whatever?
    Corel?
    Adobe?
    Pinnacle?
    etc...

I use Sony Vegas 9.0 and I love it
Adobe After Effect is more difficult to use and uses more power
Avid same story as Adobe After Effects, even harder and more power

I think Sony Vegas is the best cause it more easier to use and has all the advanced features so far I know
I only have experience editing MP4 and DV

You only what to cut edit these *.m2t MPeg2 files?
Have you tested one of these files for playback on your Blu-Ray player? (copy to a DVDR. Test 480i/720p/1080i).
Do you have a Blu-Ray burner? Are you OK with Blu-Ray media cost?

Need a bit more info to suggest software. Vegas Pro 9 will do most anything if you have the $$$.
However, you may be able to do what you want with free or low cost software.

I want to be able to edit all HD and SD formats, possibly upscale SD to HD. Then I want to be able to create a blu ray disc with menus and whatnot.

As of this moment I do not have a blu ray burner but will within a month. I'm aware of the costs for media and am ok with it (somewhat).

I was hoping for a software package within the $100 range that could perform the above or at least just to edit HD and SD content.

    Thanks!!

Edit: Is it possible to get HD quality on a standard DVD, if so I would also like this capability (maybe I'm asking for too much).

Upscale is best done by your HDTV (or the player) for full programs. You will need to do it for a mixed format segement edit.

Have you considered output formats? You can keep MPeg2 or recode to more compressed h.264 or VC-1.

Check out the Vegas product comparison. You want Vegas Pro but you may be able to live with Vegas Platinum.

Many (not all) Blu-Ray players support AVCHD format playback.

You can render to 1080i AVCHD format (a particular h.264) and burn to DVDR(5/9) and but menus will be primative file lists.

I'm not sure if Platinum supports AVCHD out. Check that.

Be aware the alternative to all this is to skip the Blu-Ray burner/player and use a disk or network based media player instead.

Thanks for the replies. I checked out Vegas Pro and it sounds like it has quite a few bugs yet unless Sony already has fixes for them. To start off with, I may just purchase the Platinum software as there's a pretty good deal on it at the moment (w/rebate), at least then I can get familiarized with how Vegas works. Anybody else have suggestions?
