  1. I´m about to convert my dvd-collection to MKVs with softsubs.
Just wondering if there is any app that can encode the vobs and extract/merge the subtitles into the mkv container in one move.
Or do I first have to rip (dvd-decrypter), encode (handbrake), extract subs (subrip) and merge with mkvmerge.
A lot of steps when it´s over 700 movies.

Handbrake can add the soft subs directly from the DVD. And you can install AnyDVD or DVD43 and you don't have to use dvddecrypter / dvdfab decrypter.

  3. Do you have to re-encode the video?

A much simpler method would be to invest in more storage and to use MakeMKV. MakeMKV will rip the movie straight from the DVD and use the original MPEG2/AC3/Subtitle streams. It might take ten minutes at the very most for each movie.

Re-encoding might save a lot of space, but with 700 movies and 4 hours per DVD conversion, you are looking at almost 4 months continuous work...

  4. Can only see one tab for subtitles in handbrake "audio & subtitles" and thats for hardsubs?
Whats the advantage of transcode to MKV vs leaving the vobs untouched.
I prefer re-encoding it because of the space. A lot of series and conserts as well (4-5 TB total) and I want to have it all on one disc.
Have two core2duos and one movie take 2 hours. In most apps you can queue and my computers doesn´t have much to do when I´m at work or gone to sleep.
The real time-problem occurs when I have to do several steps on each movie.
Ripping and re-encoding I can live with. But not 2 more steps just to get the subtitles.

As the previous guy have said the newest version of Handbrake can rip dvd to mkv with soft subtitles. It even tells you that is not "burnt in". Only if you convert to mp4 then it will be hard subtitles.

It will take you about 2 years at 2 hours a day to encode all the dvds to mkv with your present systems. To use makemkv it will take about 1.5 months at 4 hours a day.

Is the time it takes to encode worth saving space as to ripping directly?

  7. Thanks guys! Downloaded the latest version of handbrake.
Space is really an issue for me. Have a hFX htpc chassi and it only supports 2 HDs.
    2 Years?
    Have 2PCs running at 4ghz.
    1400h / 2 = 700h / 24 = 30days.

My calculations are correct,if you do one pass encoding 24 hours a day it will take 30 days,2 pass will take more than 60 days but encoding 24 hours a day on 2 machines means either you dont sleep much or work or you got some one to help and hope no glitches or o/s problems appear.
