    Noob q.

Is there a difference in quality when playing a original Blu-ray disk in a standalone player versus playing in from a hard drive or your PC, via HDMI for example.
Or dose that depend on the graphic card?

It would mostly depend on the settings for your graphic card. But the quality should be exactly the same for either if the settings are the same. With a computer you also need a Blu-ray drive and a software player. ArcSoft TotalMedia is the only one I would recommend.

I have 2 PCs with BD ROMs and output through HDMI to a 12' video screen. They both work great for BD playback. No reason to get a BD set top player for me. And I can play MKV and other formats that may not work on some set top players.

    And welcome to our forums.

I rather use my blu-ray player to watch on my hdtv cause its much easier to use with a remote control to skip chapters and rewind/ff in 10 second intervals and i can use my pc to do other things at the same time

I can watch avi, mkv, avchd and dvd folders thru my dvi-hdmi connector to my hdtv and get the exact same quality but still prefer my blu-ray player.Having geforce 8 series and up will give you the same quality.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

    The difference relates to

Gpu design / video drivers and version + software player ... variations to be consider

Device dedicated and designed for such playback is generally fixed

The second would be better but as to "same quality" ... the first case would never be an exact match
