Just to confuse us all, Western Digital have released a new version of the WDTV. They followed the tried and tested Western Digital launch method from the WDTV Live, and just left a couple in some shops one day hoping both retailers and customers would figure it out.
The new WDTV (mk2 / gen2) uses the same packaging as the original WDTV but is in fact a cut down WDTV Live, using the new Sigma 8655 chip. It also lacks the component output from the Live. The main feature addition compared to the WDTV mk1 is DTS downmix and other HD-Audio compatibilities whilst the Sigma 8655 chipset makes this one of the most powerful Media Players at any price. The same limitation as the Live are apparent here too, so no DVD-ISO or RMVB support.
The product numbers on this new box are WDBABG0000NBK-EESN / WDBABF0000NBK-NESN and the packaging will be marked 'DTS2.0' and HDMI 1.3'. If you are looking to buy either this or the old WDTV be very careful you get the right version by cross-checking with the product numbers above.
