  1. Don't know if I should post this here or in playback of h264 mkv files.

Bought the new Best Buy Insignia NS-BRDVD3 blu-ray player.

I bought it for first the playback through the USB connection, and the Netflix downstreaming.
The USB connection is not a hot shoe, and will not power small portable hard drives like my Western Digital Passport, only thumb drives.

It does recognize h264 files, and plays them well with sound. But the subtitles are gone! Can't watch Japanese anime without the subs.
I don't want to downgrade the mkv files by the tedious job of converting them to avi. Can anyone give me some links or suggestions
on how to get those subs???
And the newest firmware offered for this player removes the playback of both avi and mkv files.
People think it is a re-badged LG 370 or a DeSay if that helps.
    Thanks,
    Lyndon

  2. If it's a rebadged LG370, it should play AVCHD. You could try tsMuxer, select the *.mkv, make sure the *.pgs (presentation graphics stream: subs) is there, and mux to AVCHD. Burn to a DVDR blank with ImgBurn. Try it in the player and see. Good luck.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

  3. I can also download the converted file to the USB, right?

I will download this and try it.

It is just a shame that I can't just play the file.

    Will report back later.

  4. Another thing to report on this player is it won't play commercial standard discs that have been encoded in VTS 6.

Educate me on VTS 6. Was it an encryption to block people from backing up their discs?

The same discs play fine on my Philips 5990.
Also, Best Buy offered a firmware update for this player, and it TAKES AWAY the ability to play certain files it could before, but their
official word is the new firmware makes the Netflix downstreaming smoother.

I bought the Western Digital Media Player Live this week, and it is supposed to play most formats. But this burns me that the firmware
in the Insignia should be able to play the mkv files with the subs without hard coding. I guess not enough people care.

    Thanks,
    Lyndon
