ok, my setup is: i have a xbox 360 that i play on my monitor and i have a haupauge hd pvr capture card and was wondering if there is a way to somehow record my gameplay with my hd pvr and still play on my monitor at the monitors max resolution, i was thinking of using the regular xbox 360 component cables to run to the hd pvr and from the pvr, use the component to vga cable that they sell on ebay and other places, but my worry with that is that its not gonna be on the right resolution on my monitor since the xbox is sending a 720p resolution through xbox 360 component cables, and my monitor is at 1650x1080, if you understand what i mean please help!

Rushinplaya,
I'm not sure you want to set things up that way. Having something between your console and the display (your monitor) will probably introduce lag at usually unacceptable levels for gamers. What you need is something that will split the output from your console to both your monitor and your hdpvr.
If you don't mind playing in HD but recording in SD (480p/dvd quality) then the original 360 component/composite cable (red/green/blue for component, yellow for composite, and red/white for audio) would work. You'd simply put the component to vga adapter for your monitor (you shouldn't notice any displya degredation...) and the coposite to the hdpvr. With a simple audio splitter you should be able to have sound on both.
Now, if you want HD playing and HD recording, that's another story. Though there are plenty low-cost vga-component adapters around (but be careful, some of these convert to RGB...) I don't now of any that will play the part of splitter as well. You'll have to look around.
Thinking... thinking... thinking...
I've got an old vga splitter/switch, can be found for under US$10, and that might do the trick now that I think about it. You'd put the 360 vga as input, have a vga to vga for your monitor and the vga to component for the hdpvr. Have to do something similar for the sound. But yah, I think you can do it...Have a good one,
neomaine

the hd pvr has a componet and audio in and out, which has no lag, does that change anything?

I'd say exit 360 in HD analog component, split in a component DA (no lag). Then feed the HDTV and HD PVR analog component from the DA.

Yes I agree. The HD-PVR can loop analog componet in and out to the TV so no DA is required.

Like DVI and VGA (15pin Sub-d)
But if on have on input the I think you need look for a Video Converter and there not cheap $300+ at all you would be better getting a TV or 2nd PC monitor and more low cost video converter like from StarTech.com A/V Component to DVI-I Format Converter Scan converter $100. -

Disagree. It will output both component and composite at the same time. If he can find a component to vga solution for his monitor and and doesn't mind SD capture to the HDPVR, then he's all set.

Back to the OP's original setup.
He can't output VGA to the computer monitor and analog component to the HD-PVR at the same time even if both are set to 720p unless something has changed with Xbox360 accessories.
The 1680x1050 computer monitor won't accept analog component.
An analog component to VGA converter would cost nearly as much as a small HDTV like this one (1600x900 panel resolution). It will accept 1080i or 720p over analog component and internally scale to 1600x900. Plus you get a good TV that doubles as a computer monitor for $199. http://www.vizio.com/vx200e.html

ill look into buying a small hdtv, that sounds like a good idea, i didnt know they made something as small as 20inches, thanks for all the help!

If you can afford it go a slightly bigger HDTV with 1080p and pixel-for-pixel mapping. The Desktop will look much better with that.

I came across this thread via a google search. I just wanted to add that if you want to record while using a monitor you can. I am currently doing it by splitting the VGA from my xbox and using a VGA to composite converter (I'm using kworld PC to TV). The VGA splitter is one male, 2 female.
XBox 360 -> VGA splitter female
The other VGA splitter female -> VGA to composite converter
VGA splitter Male to monitor
VGA to composite converter -> my usb capture device
Of course your quality will suffer, but you will be able to record SD and still get high quality video on your monitor.

What is the resolution your playing the game at? And is there any input lag?
