Ive been trying for ages to find a way to burn avi files to dvd and watch them on a stand alone dvd player. On all the forums it seems you have to encode the avi files so that they are mpeg2. Everything i try takes forever or is really confusing. I got ffmpegx, got it all installed properly..followed the step by step guide..the incoding from avi to mpeg2 took about 5 hours. I continued following the instructions, found the movie.dvd file with the audio_ts and video_ts files, tested the video_ts in mac dvd player and it started playing but was just blank. I decided to still try and burn it to dvd since it had taken 5 hours to encode so, burnt them on to a dvd using toast6 which took a matter of minutes which i thought was unusually quick since it takes about 20 minutes to burn an audio cd or data dvd.

When it was ready I put it in my normal dvd player and it started playing as in the timer started ticking but the screen was just blank, no picture or sound.

What did I do wrong? Would love some help on this please its driving me mad! why cant it just be simple and easy?

    thanks

Moving you to our mac section.

    The audio_ts should be empty.

Try also play the dvd using VLC Media Player, if it's also blank something went wrong in the conversion. Try another avi to dvd converter tool( I have no idea what as I don't use mac)

before any burn, try the DVD:
    - drop the VIDEO_TS folder on DVDPlayer.app icon to open it
    - if your DVD-VIDEO contents is OK, then burn it (and if not… try again )
    - burn it at the slowest speed for better compatibility with home players (personnaly, I use the app LiquidCD http://www.maconnect.ch/ -option DVD-VIDEO- to burn)

    bye

I agree with Herve. If Apple's DVD Player doesn't play the VIDEO_TS folder right, then burning it will not result in a playable DVD disc.

When the converted video is blank, most likely your source file wasn't decoded correctly, so it couldn't be encoded correctly.
It might be time to tells us a bit about your source file: What is its video codec?
