is there a program that will backup a dvd by retaining only the menu and the movie itself and ripping out the trailers, extras etc? whats the easiest way to do this without having to re-create a new menu? dvdshrink doesnt allow me to keep the menu intact, must be an app that does it no?

    Actually, it does.

You can use DVD Shrink, but replace the titles you don't want with a black still image. This will take up a small amount of space as it will be encoded into a very low bitrate video running the same length as whatever it replaced.

There is also VOBBlanker, which can remove titles while keeping eveything else intact.

    And, in the commercial realm,

DVD Rebuilder Pro, which adds to the already strong feature set of the free version the ability to drop titles form the structure, and

DVD Remake, which also allows for menu editing and re-pathing of the selections.

  3. Use VobBlanker to blank out what you don't want to keep. Afterwards, if it's still larger than DVD5 size use DVD Shrink (good), DVD-Rebuilder (better), or reencode manually (best) to cut it down to size.

well tried all .. all issues with them. the best of the bunch would be dvd rebuilder pro which has "movies and menus (extras blank)" only, BUT you cannot use no compression.. you have to re-encode the whole movie! takes too long even on quad core, 4gb ram, using QuEnc encoder.

vobblanker, not sure what its problem is .. seems easy to use, and fast, yet once done, the movie doesnt work in wmp or vlc!

dvd remake, works fast and easy too, yet movies with subtitles dont work.. even though i didnt blank them out! and it also converts the menu to still images (like dvd shrink).

If I were blaming anything for a problem, it wouldn't be the program itself. If I've blanked stuff out of one DVD, I've done it easily over 500 times. With never a problem. I'd be more likely to blame ... never mind.

Open the DVD. Highlight and blank out what you don't want - logos, extras, whatever. Give it an Output Folder. Process. And the result will play in any software DVD player. You are playing the output as a DVD, aren't you, and not just as a file?

gave vobblanker another try .. worked now when i burnt it to dvd and played it on standalone player. the only thing i dont get is how to delete/blank say on the menu "extras" button itself.. is this possible? liek for instance, when i click on extras it goes to them but you cant access any cause i blanked them out. yet i want to also blank out the extras button from main menu, possible?

  8. Yes, it's possible, but PGCEdit is the program for that. Open the DVD in PGCEdit. Right-click on the menu with buttons you want to make un-clickable and hit 'Menu Buttons'. In the new Menu Buttons screen highlight the button you want to get rid of and go Edit->Hide Button->Jump To Non-deleted Button. 'OK' back and do it some more until you've done the buttons for that menu. If there are other buttons to get rid of in other menus, go back to the main screen and start over. File->Save DVD when all done and test in a software player before burning to disc.

If by chance a blanked button is also the highlighted one when you first go into that menu (usually the top button), with the menu highlighted in the main screen go Menu (along the top)->Select a Non-hidden Button By Default, and follow the easy instructions.

DVDFab in "customize" mode - but it's not FREE!

You then simply open the customize folder in the location you saved to; play it to test it, then either shrink it (if you didn't before) or burn it.

It does occasionally have issues on some new releases, but that is usually fixed in a day or so.

This sounds more like it might be an issue with whatever you used to rip the disc. Never had a problem at all like the one you are describing using remake. Are you sure you did not accidently disable the subs?
